All of those that came out of the woodwork to vote Obama don't have a fucking clue what's going on.
I have friends exactly like this, they have no idea what's really going on but voted Obama because it was the "cool" thing to do.
Cue my "ignorant Obama voters" post earlier ITT

McCain would have done no better... at least to this point. He would have inherited the same problems as Obama. Difference would be that he would have kept on touting the old Rep ways of doing "business", instead of trying to do what's best for the country.
If anything Obama getting elected has forced the GOP to rethink it's philosophies. I'm looking forward to seeing what a younger and more open minded rep party can give us for candidates in the future. Before Bush I used to be more rep than dem... 8 years of hell changed that.
... except that our economy revolves around business.

Oh Romney, why couldn't you get the ticket?
Thank you! Someone atleast gets it.

If you want a report card, then you need to figure out what you are grading against.
If you are grading him against what he said he would do, then he gets an A+. He has done everything he said he was going to do. If you think he has gone too far, or you think that what he is doing isn't what he said he would do, then you need to learn to listen. Get past his nice delivery (not his pitching delivery) and listen to what he says. May I also remind you that he also wants to create a civilian defense force under his control as big, as strong, as well trained, and as well funded as our actual military is, he wants to force our youth into "public service" so they can learn how to care for others, and he wants to insure that we never forget that race is important.
If you are grading him against what is good for the country, then he is below an F. But we knew going in that was what he would do. It's what the "enlightened", "progressive" voters wanted. The man is a stooge, a political slut, and horribly misguided.
Also, for those of you who think Bush was an idiot, well sorry, but you are the idiot. Bush did a lot of good in office. He will be remembered as a good president where Obama will be remembered as a disaster (if he is remembered at all). Those who think Bush was an idiot just drank the coolaid that the media wanted you to drink. Stupid fickle people. The reason most republicans and conservatives don't defend Bush was because he made a lot of mistakes too and allowed congress to push through a lot of liberal crap. He wasn't tough enough on them and he didn't call them out when they were stupid enough times and he didn't expose and put the brakes on the scamming going on in the financial industry mostly caused by congress.
McCain lost because he was too old, too wishy washing, and didn't hold his ground on anything. He was far to liberal for most conservatives to stomach, and he was an ugly old man so most "progressives" couldn't see past that to vote for him. McCain tried to win by saying "I'm a democrat" and hoping that the republicans would vote for him because he was a republican and the democrats would vote for him because he was more democrat than republican.
So, in the end, it came down to a high school popularity contest where the beautiful airhead gets elected because she has nice tits (or speaking voice in this case). Way to go America. Maybe we can elect Paris Hilton to office to work alongside Al Frankin.
Agreed, I'd love to see cuts in all sorts of things... mainly the bureaucracy. Flat tax everyone at say... 10% (OH NOES!!!) and you'd eliminate quite a bit of gov't bureaucracy right there. The IRS would shrink by 95% (also made up). Then send ALL surplus' to the deficit. At least until the gov't owned portion was paid off.
See now this is what I have been thinking for all too long ... and how hard is it for the Gov to figure it out? I mean really Flat tax across the board. No loop holes, no deductions, just a flat tax straight up.

Better yet how about a fair tax???? You know the kind based on what you consume rather than on what you earn, this way you remove the penalty for being productive. Say a 12% VAT on everything but food and shelter (including clothing), That way if you want to be a cheap ass and not pay much tax you wont buy much new
Hallen: I have been looking forward to reading you take on this thread all day. While I am not a big "W" fan I have been saying for a long time that History will smile on him.
I didn't see this post. If you've read anything else that I've posted in here you'll know that I'm probably more against socialiazed healthcare than anyone on this board. It's a horrible idea. I voted for Obama because social freedoms are important to me. Like I said earlier - the right will hardly admit that non-believers like myself exist. I can't bring myself to vote for someone who is that opposed to my beliefs. Economically I pretty much disagree with everything Obama does. I never said I'd do it again if given the chance. I probably would write in Ron Paul if I did it again. I also never said I liked how things were going - just that it takes time to see the scope of the damage caused by actions. We won't really know anything until year 2.
So you voted for someone who spent a large chunk of his campaigning talking about socialized healthcare because you didn't want to vote for someone who opposed your own beliefs. Maybe I am missing something here, it is late for me, but isn't this a contradiction?
I'm never surprised. Obviously being a libertarian means neither sides appeal to me. The right is influenced by faith and tries to impose on our personal lives - the left may not have the best grasp on economics and supports big govt - which I generally dislike. Since I'm only really given two options I have to choose which of these two ideals I'm going to give up with my vote. I personally wanted to see more liberals in the supreme court because that's what matters most to me. It's also worth noting that I'm an atheist and I very much dislike faith based legislation. Obama has always spoken kindly towards non-believers and I appreciate that. The right won't admit they exist. I feel like my decision was most in line with my principles. You may disagree, but that's your right.
But you see, economics are the means to our freedoms. If we don't have economic freedom, we will not have social freedom. If you vote for strong economics and the freedom to prosper that comes with them, then you will have the latitude of social freedom. If you try for a social construct alone, one based on forced equality, then you will have nothing but poverty and all the social ills that come with it. Illiteracy, ignorance, the desire to belong to something bigger, fertile ground for religious fanatics, aye?
Also, don't let the left distract you with recriminations of the right (the same holds true for the far right. They are just as loony as the far left). Most conservatives are not going to force any form of religion at you. The state will not force religion on you. Yes, there are far right conservatives who would try, but that is a very small minority. I think you would be very surprised to find that there are a huge number of conservatives out there, like me, who are not religious at all or are only mildly religious and would never dream of infringing on the religious freedoms guaranteed in the constitution.
Yes, you may see things like "In God we trust" on the dollar bill and you may actually have to put up with somebody praying for you (gasp, how horrible), but you are not going to be forced by the state to worship a particular religion. This country was founded under strong Christian beliefs. It is all through our history. It is where our basic moral foundation comes from. There is no shame in that. A strong moral foundation is important to all of us. Whether you believe the moral foundation comes from the inherent goodness of people and our rights to life, or if you believe it comes as a God given directive hardly matters. Strong morals are different than religious fervor. Strong morals and economic freedom is mostly what I stand for and what I believe most conservatives stand for.
So, don't let a little tongue wagging about religion and how it will be forced down your throat by the republicans fool you. It isn't going to happen.
On the other hand, the socialist agenda being pushed now is designed to make you beholden to the state, almost as if the state were the deity. That thought scares me more than all the JW's who have ever come knocking on my door.

i would be all for a VAT tax! The only bad thing about it would be all the surplus money the would be generated, and how the government would just waste it without some serious changes.
