Does it also make sense that there is less risk involved to the perpetrator of the crime in an area where gun control is strict? What if this area neighbors those that allow guns? (DC for example)
There would be little to no change in the likelyhood of the perp being armed with a gun, but a much lower chance of running into the average joe in an alley who could also be packing.
Makes sense to mug those who won't be firing back. It's not like criminals don't travel around to make an illicit profit.
