That could be. I thought the chassis was plenty stiff, but the car was aerodynamically completely unstable at speed. They were very softly sprung, which seems surprising now. They dialed out a lot of nose dive under braking.

Porsche had always been so good at making slippery lightweight things go through the air, but with that kind of power and speeds, uplift became a problem. That long, down-turned tail wasn't working. The '69 917s were awful and no one wanted to drive them. Elford was sort of a genius or a risk taker and he managed to wrestle them. A lot of drivers opted to stay with their proven 908s in major races in '69 and into 70. Remember that in '69, Hermann was second at Le Mans by a couple hundred feet to the Ford GT40, in a 908. They swapped the lead for hours, but Hermann decided to stay out and fight on old brakes and they went away at the end.

It was the short tail, wedge-shaped "K" version that finally solved it. They had plenty of power for the extra drag. I read that John Wyer was instrumental in developing the aero on that car in late '69.

OK, help me identify this car -
Looks to be Gulf blue & orange.
Left door looks like it's an open targa top.
        6 cyl - early 908s were sixes?
        I don't think it's a 906 - wrong tub (?)
It's got a longish tail - I see a fiberglass belly tray behind the trans.

            ^ 910 variant, perhaps?

Edit: Didn't see LJ's post until just now.

Oh, you guys are right. '67 910 had an open top. Based on the 906, the factory actually called it a 906/10. Only raced in 1967. I thought they were after the 908, not before.

It was unreal to think about the money racing when I saw several Ferrari 250s running in the same group at the Historics...

The 9R3 Le Mans prototype that never happened. A 5 liter V10 designed for F1.

A secret deal with VW cancelled it so both companies could develop the Toureg / Cayenne, and Porsche wouldn't compete in LMP1 for 10 years. Piech was behind the deal.

Interesting tidbit - this engine became the RS Spyder V8 with two less cylinders (and is of course the Carrera GT engine).

The board allowed engineers to finish the first car and test it briefly at Weissach with Bob Wollek and Allan McNish.
