The point I'm making is that, yes, today there are more radical Muslms than there are radical Christians. Just like in the Dark Ages there were far more radical Christians than there were radial Muslims. After all, during the Spanish Inquisition, it was the Ottomans (who were the undisputed leaders of the Islamic world...the Sultan was Caliph, after all) who welcomed all the Jews into western Anatolia. At a time when every Christian state in Europe turned them away, the Ottomans accepted them, allowed them to become land-owning citizens, and gave them unrestricted religious freedom.

Not too long ago, it was the Islamic world that was far more tolerant than the Christian world. Today, the situation is the opposite. Fine.

The problem I have is with people looking at the situation today and saying Islam preaches violence and intolerance. That somehow terrorism and fundamentaism were inevitable.

I think the point you are trying to make is that Islam's history shows that it is not a religion of violence. You site actual history where Muslims were more tolerant and more open than Christians. Only recently has Islam been used as the tool for instigating violence.

I don't know enough about Islam to say weather it does or does not preach violence. I think that the radical element most certainly does use Islam in that way. However, I do agree that the radical element does not represent the whole of Islam and should not be used to judge Islam as a whole. I do have a suspicion that the way the Quran is written leaves it more open to interpretation as a license to commit violence.

I still think that the Islamic radicals out there are more the result of isolation, ignorance, fear (of change and loss of their way of life), and manipulation by insidious and evil people. They are told that the world is against them and if they don't fight, they will die. Islam is just the tool they use to meet their goals.
