I'm all for the death penalty and I think these people spend way to long on death row awaiting execution. It pisses me the fuck off when people compare abortion to the death penalty, though. How can you possibly convince yourself that an innocent baby life that hasn't even had a chance is the same as an evil piece of shit that has decided to take someone's right to life away from them. The argument that as humans we should be above the person who we are judging therefore above killing just as they did, I can sort of understand but I would still rather they were gone from society not just tucked in the back corner to live our their lives. It is the people who are anti death penalty and pro choice who are seriously fucked in the head and I will never understand that way of thinking.

A serial killer that laughed as he blew the brains out of innocent people just living their lives... BUT I'm sure your basing most of this on religion anyways SOOOOOOOOO.......... there's a whole other problem in itself.

Or $10k+ more than the avg income in the country? And most receive 3 squares a day, cable TV, etc etc etc.

The average cost of an execution in Texas is 2.3 MILLION Dollars, which is three time higher than the average Life In Prison cost (based on 40year imprisonment
Since the reenactment of the death penalty in the state of Maryland, a Capital Punishment case will cost 3 MILLION dollars MORE than a fully served Life Imprisonment case in a Maximum Security Prison! The 5 cases since the the reenactment have cost MD taxpayers 37 MILLION Dollars!!!!
Report of the California Commission on the Fair Administration of Justice
“The additional cost of confining an inmate to death row, as compared to the maximum security prisons where those sentenced to life without possibility of parole ordinarily serve their sentences, is $90,000 per year per inmate. With California’s current death row population of 670, that accounts for $63.3 million annually.”Using conservative rough projections, the Commission estimates the annual costs of the present (death penalty) system to be $137 million per year.
The cost of the present system with reforms recommended by the Commission to ensure a fair process would be $232.7 million per year.
The cost of a system in which the number of death-eligible crimes was significantly narrowed would be $130 million per year.
The cost of a system which imposes a maximum penalty of lifetime incarceration instead of the death penalty would be $11.5 million per year.

Wow you guys really need to do research, a simple google search turns up plenty of current information to refute your cost claims. You're not even close.

I say we start using prison systems like the french and italians used to have. It was a deterrent, cost very little, and most died from imprisonment.
Basically, you get a 5'x5'x5' hole in the wall with no light, no bed, and a bucket for a toilet. For your entire sentence you don't leave the cell and no one talks to you. Most go crazy or die of malnutrician within the first year.
Oh the joys of being a criminal.-tim

Based on those numbers, the avg prisoner costs around $19k a year to house. But that's averaged. So far I'm having trouble (quickly) trying to find the numbers for violent offenders in state and federal institutions. And that is who we are talking about, convicted murderers/rapists, etc.
Not someone who ends up in the city jail for 45 days for the their 3rd DUI.Need parts now? Need them cheap? steve@blunttech.com

On the one hand you have a mentally deranged serial killer who murdered 10 innocent people. He was being held in prison using tax payer dollars and would have to be held for his entire life because he can never be released back into society. So for these reasons he should be executed.
On the other hand, because of the appeals process and such, executing someone costs a lot of money as well, maybe even as much as keeping them in jail. Also, there are definite flaws in the justice system which have allowed innocent people to be executed for crimes they did not commit (I am not saying the DC sniper is innocent by any means). Lastly, executing the guy just lowers us to his level. So for these reasons, he should live.
I think the best way to go would be to keep convicted murderers locked in solitary confinement for the rest of their lives. It would allow them ample time to think about what they did and maybe even eventually feel a sense of guilt and pain at least somewhat comparable to the pain they inflicted upon the victim and their families. They don't get to feel any of this pain if they are just killed.
