Dell or HP laptop?

    Alright guys,

So its time that I retire my 5 year old IBM (lenovo laptop). I have been looking online at costco.com at some good deals and have really narrowed it down between this one HP and Dell. I really cannot make up my mind. The HP seems to offer a little more "umph" with a 512mb graphics card, while the Dell is shared.

    Dell Inspiron 17:

Shop Costco.com for electronics, computers, furniture, outdoor living, appliances, jewelry and more. Enjoy low warehouse prices on name-brands products delivered to your door.

    HP DV7t:

Shop Costco.com for electronics, computers, furniture, outdoor living, appliances, jewelry and more. Enjoy low warehouse prices on name-brands products delivered to your door.

So the verdict? Dell or this HP?

Thanks guys, your help is greatly appreciated! :)

Oh, and uses will be for personal (College) and light gamming (not WoW status)

Yeah the difference is HP seems to have better RAM (DDR3 vs dells DDR2), and what catches my eye is the 512mb graphics card...plus the HP computer looks pretty sweet. I heard that HP laptops aren't as reliable as Dell, is that true?

My HP so far has been reliable, it is HP Pavillion DV4, got it in August, and so far is has worked well. I think my next laptop might be a Mac, just to try something different. And after that, I might get an Alienware.

i had this same choice some time ago
          dell screwed up the order
it took me 3 hours on the phone with someone in bangladesh speaking broken english to get the order straight

i killed the dell order after this and bot a HP which has worked well

Dell gets you an N wireless card and 120gb of storage over the HP. Hp gives you a better battery and an actual video card. The Dell does not say whether it comes with 64bit OS or not but the HP does so that is a huge plus for HP. I would personally go for the HP, especially if you want to do any kind of gaming.

dell laptops SUCK. I don't know anyone that has had one that didn't break after just a few months of owning it. Their desktops are ok at best.

I have a cheap HP G60 laptop and love it. I don't play games and use my external hard drive to store everything so disk space is not an issue but its very reliable.

i have a Dell laptop (dell studio), my mom bought the inspiron at the same time, both are good, the customer service sucks because you get the durka durkas when you call. but mine came with vista 64bit, they sent me a free copy of windows 7 and i am on that now, the laptop is good. i hate HP, both the HP desktop and laptop that i have owned shit the bed within a month of owning it. yes i know how to use a computer, never get viruses or anything. on the laptop the charger port was fucked up on it, and they said "its a common issue, send it in, pay us 600 dollars and we'll look at it for you".....gtfo. on the desktop, the hard drive took a shit 2 times.

EDIT: i've been on the same dell desktop for 6 years now. i play world of warcraft and counter strike, it runs both smoothly and all i did was do an upgrade of 2GB of corsair DDR2. upgraded the hard drive to a 500gb as well. and it never gets shut off for a day.

I've had my HP dv6000t for over 3 years with absolutely zero hardware problems. I've also had a ton of experience with both brands and I know HP makes far better products than Dell, you name it; printers, pda's, monitors, speakers, desktops, etc.

Edit: Dell is cheaper usually, but you get what you pay for.

HP hands down. I just picked up a dv6 and i am really impressed. I bought a Dell laptop about two years ago, and after about 6 months it started running really shitty. I put linux on it, hoping it would run better. Come to find out it was overheating and the Windows drivers were stepping down the CPU speed. Even after cleaning the fan and heatsinks thoroughly, it still got really fucking hot.
