isn't it funny that when 100k were dying from hunger no one was giving a shit, but now that mother nature ran it's coarse, suddenly everyone wants to help?

I feel sad for all these people, but at the same time, I'd like to go to Haiti on a vacation one day when it's not a shithole. It's one of the most poverty stricken places in the world, and if US was going to help, sending food would have helped in the last 30 years.

        PS: those pics are gut-wrenching

I like this. Why do we feel the need to fix everyones problems. Sure when something like this happens they need some help and we can give it to them, but the the UN watching over them, really?

I agree with Lee. The people of Haiti clearly aren't doing a good job anyway.

a cold shower for other developed countries? What, that earthquakes in populated areas are catastrophic and that nature > all the money in the world? Yeah, hopefully this one drives it home. The forces of nature will place even the greatest of nations under extreme pressure. What happened here in the US, the developed country of developed countries? As far as placing countries under supervision, I don't even know where to begin. If you are in a rush for one world order, by all means.

Maybe you guys should start making a list as Haiti is far from the one country your ideas would apply to.

The people of Haiti are struggling to survive. They can't care less about politics or any form of democracy. All they want is their next meal. At that point, they need support for their daily needs, as well as to implement a better social structure. Why the UN? Simply because they don't represent any political ideology. They are neutral. It is not one country speaking out or helping out but a collective. Does it mean that the UN would govern for a few years? Not necessarely. They will just support the current government and help them with no other agenda than building up a country. Lot of money will be needed to reconstruct the buildings and the social grid.

The cold shower is that rich countries tend to hide things they don't want to see. Haiti is worst than a third world country. And it is not far from the North and South American continents.

But hey, maybe Pat Robertson was right and that Haiti is doomed. And it's their fault. They shouldn't have made a pact with the devi to free themselve from British and French slavery... The devil has just claimed back 200,000 souls as instant payment.

Who's fault is it that Haiti was a shit-hole before the earthquake?

Probably the fault from decades of brutal dictatorship and profiters.

                            And this:

"In the past two decades, US interventions have done much more harm than good to the Haitian economy. In the early 1990s, Washington thought it did Haiti a favour by imposing a crushing trade embargo to bring about democratisation – specifically, the reinstatement of democratically elected President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. The embargo destroyed Haiti's fragile manufacturing industries.

"Then, true to America's political swings, ideologues in the Bush administration spent years trying to oust Aristide, first by foisting a de facto and illegal aid freeze on international development agencies, and then by brazenly toppling Aristide and carrying him to the Central African Republic. Congress took a pass on reviewing these sordid events, pausing only to declare its love for the Haitian people."

A lot of foreign money will be infused in Haiti to help reconstruct buildings. This will create jobs and spread a bit of wealth to help reconstruct a social canvas that has long time disapeared. There's a huge Haitian diaspora around the world. Some being highly educated. Some being simple cab drivers. They now have a certain responsibility to give a hand to the birth country they once fled.

No they don't. It is never someone else's responsibility. Helping Haiti is irresponsible, if anything.

Population Control is a heartless concept, but it has to take place. Haiti is overpopulated (was? :-D) and overpopulation causes society not to be able to sustain itself. There's absolutely no way a 10 million population can survive on a piece of land the size of West Virginia. There's not enough agriculture and not enough fresh water.

Probably, the downfall of Haiti are Haitians.
