Oh really? Innovation and growth can't go on forever. Eventually this whole pyramid scheme that we like to call the economy is going to become unsustainable and it's going to collapse. Deforestation, agriculture, oil drilling, etc. coupled with rapid world population growth means that the resources of this planet are being depleted at an exponential rate. Once these resources reach peek production, especially oil, it's all downhill from there.

Riiiight. The diseases we currently cure should be the only ones we need to? There is no reason to encourage any new treatment? What we have now is acceptable, so the bigger concern is to divvy it up among more people instead of push ahead?
Even if they couldn't afford the greatest high-tech treatments at their introduction, new healthcare approaches have helped even the poorest people and nations as they have tricked down to places like Africa. If we cure AIDs because of the $$$ here in the US, then we can help people a lot more through philanthropy than we can with only good intentions but no cure.
What if we had decided blood letting was "good enough" and other options would have used too many resources... ?Comment

What about low-till or no-till agriculture that reduces energy used and erosion? There are conservation strategies that come through innovation with resources in mind. How many logging practices have become renewable? Who the hell is going to tear up Brazil for soy in an economy like this? Things come around, and there will be pressure with prices might re-encourage such practice, but hopefully the yield promises some companies are talking about will happen so innovation will provide the world with more grain supplies.
Oil? How the hell will innovation help? Greater gas mileage? A practical solution to gasoline? Oh no, innovation is the evil, according to Holmes!!!?
You're the one who is falling for pyramid schemes... but that doesn't mean a capitalist economy is one.
When oil's supply is downhill, the price will rise and encourage alternatives. That is, unless a socialist leader keeps the price the same for everyone's enjoyment.
I understand your reasoning completely, but like I said, innovation and growth cannot go on forever. The economy is simply unsustainable. Things have hit the fan in the past, and they will again. It will be different though, because in the 1930's there weren't over 6 billion people to feed.
But is now the time to help the poor, stupid, and unhealthy survive for a little bit longer? Because apparently it is the government's job to take care of people who cannot take care of themselves? What governments can take care of all the world's people for free?Comment
