I wore them when I was in the Army, and they can take a beating. They protect like boots, are extremely durable, breathe well, stain resistant, and they fit like a sneaker. I was on my feet 12+ hours a day for 15 months straight, and they were my best friend.

I have been wearing the same steel cap boots for the past 15 years. They saw salt, extreme cold, got rubbed on concrete and cost only around $30.00 for as-new used ones from the army surplus. Whenever I work on a car, I wear the boots. And they are extremely comfy. You can fit a felt pad at the bottom for increased comfort and warmth.

Glad you said it, after 15 years (unless worn like 5 days a year) they would be junk as the sole, shank, and everything would be broken down so bad that you feet should hurt just looking at them. that and the leather unless taken care of would just have turned to dust in that kinda time

I'll be in Great Falls. Would you recommend insulated boots or uninsulated? The Georgia boots I'm looking at come uninsulated also. The "wetland" looks more heavy duty than I think I'll need.

Next what months are you going to be there???? And how much time will you be spending outside and what all kinds of things do you get into while in the field??? If you are gonna be in the office 99% of the time and only step out for 10-15 mins at a time and no more then those will be fine but thats all you will get outta them before your toes are like ice.

Really if you are gonna be up there in the dead of winter a good winter boot is what you want not a 200g insulated leather work boot, you want a good 800ish gram insulated boot even if you are fairly active, if all you do is stand around (inspector) and dont have much options to get outta the cold then you may want more insulation. Wool socks are a must and I really like wool garments in the winter time.

You really need several pairs of boots for different situations, I use my "muck" boots for 90% of winter duty and if I need mud boots in the summer, I have winter hunting/work boots for when its brutally cold, and my normal work boots. The mucks are really light 100% water proof, and very comfortable, although not supper supportive.

I would suggest you invest in good compression long underwear, and dress in layers and have a good work jacket and bibs that will cut the wind as its windy as fuck in G.F. There is not a big influx of Californians in GF for a reason, the wind blows them away.

Not all boots can be the same in the army navy store. Some of those boots looks pretty shitty. Massive, are there any names or anything on your boots?

Mine are standard issue Canadian army boots. Made from heavy leather. The only writing is on the sole.

Nitrile Gum. Oil and Acid resistant.

Looks like the Canadian army has better boots than down South ;-)

I think I'll be there about mid October till January. I'm really not sure how much i'll be outside. Sometimes i'm inside almost all day. I'm usually not outside more than half of the day, and maybe only for 2-3 hours at a time. I'm a project engineer, so when i'm outside, i'm usually walking around observing.

I'm planning on having to buy some warmer long underwear and other clothes when i get out there. I was going to pick up some fleece lined jeans at least for now.

So you are thinking I might need more than 400g insulation? I don't recall seeing anything more than 400g at the stores i've been to around my home town. There is a Cabela's in Reno about an hour and a half away. Maybe I'll see if I can make it out there this weekend.

we don't need to have the same boots for 15 years. Matter a fact we can comfortably buy new ones every year if we wished to. But it's good to know Canada's militia has boots down.
