It was terrible at the start. Yes that Iron Duke was crap. In typical GM fashion it wasn't half bad at the end of the product cycle, but it's reputation had been tarnished so badly nobody would touch it. In later years it handled right, the cooling problems had been fixed, and the v6 had decent power (for the day.)

Before they killed it there were prototypes running around with the 180 / 190hp Quad 4 in the middle, THAT would have been a really sick car.

yes the 84 Iron Dukes wiring did catch fire a couple of times. Really what did you expect outta GM in the 80's Iron duke is really hard to kill and served in one form or another all the way up into the early 2000's. Duke were slow and underpowered but RELIABLE.

The latter late 85-88 Gts ans Formulas were bad ass little cars. 2500lbs, Mid engined, rear drive, manual, for the time it was a great little car and now a days it still is.

LoL yeah that was gonna be the SE line, the 3.4 DOHC was designed to be 300hp N/A and built specifically for the 2ed gen Fiero. But GM top brass said NO that will hurt the vette sales you cant build that. So Pontiac brass killed it all together. Rumors still abound that they sold all the R&D and prototype stuff to honda and 3 years latter the NSX was born.

Oh and the 3.4 DOHC that was in other GM products were the 300hp version that was detunned to 230 because despite 3 years+ Hydromattic could not build a tranny to live behind it for long.
