I think you should go for it Kristin. You got it right when you said if you don't like it, you can take it out, and it will heal back up 100%. You will only be out a little money.

As for the actually piercing, I am sure you will be smart enough to find a reputable shop that Autoclaves their needles, etc. Leave the barbell that they pierce you with in as long as they tell you to. Don't use anything acrylic until it's fully healed. Even then, stick with steel unless its really bothering you. Human bodies try much harder to reject arcyrlic than surgical grade steel. Piercings also heal a lot faster with steel.

The main thing that's nice about piercing is that they are temporary. I want a tattoo, but I hope I never get one because I have a hard time believing I could come up with anything that I would still like even 5 years down the road.

I have ALWAYS wanted one, but never done it. Same here with the tattoo. I have always wanted something small and discrete, but it is SO permanent. A tongue piercing seems the more reversible of the two.

Okay...so how do I research shops? I want to do it in Austin once I get moved in. Doing it here while I am in Houston with the parents is not something I want to take on, they aren't THAT oblivious.

Can I use acrylic tops and bottoms so that it will blend a bit until I WANT to show it?

My wife used to have one (about 6 or 7 years ago) she was just my girlfriend then. Like some other people have said, they are pretty easy to hide once your tongue heals (she had to hide it from her parents at the time).

She took it out about four years ago and it healed up straight away.

I say go for it if you want it.

for everyone else talking about tatoos, just make sure you find something you will always like and nothing trendy. I have one that goes from shoulder to shoulder and haven't been tired of it yet (about 4 years old) but it (the tatoo) also has meaning for my heritage (native american) so I know I won't get tired of it.

I also agree with some of the others in that a tongue pierce makes no different when a girl gives a wah wah. They are either good, or they are either bad. I don't think a piercing does shit.

It's probably more important her experience/talent. I used to think one was "missing out" if there was no ring, but now not so much.

Kristin, they sell black anodized steel and/or titanium barbells which are black, you should go with those if you want it less obvious to begin with. If the shop doesn't carry those, you can probably buy one online and bring it in and they will put it in for you. I'd hold off on even the acrylic balls until it's healed. You could get away with it, but black steel or ti is a better choice.

I would have to go against what normal parlors say about switching the bar out. Normally they tell you to wait 3 weeks, but it seems that most tongue piercings stop swelling within two. Get a good steel bar that is the correct length and clean it before putting it in once the swelling goes down(~2 weeks), this way you avoid biting the bar/ball and destroying your molars

Had a friend that had two (I dunno what type of piercing - they were just straight through the middle of his tongue - two balls)... he had to take them out because of some problems with scar tissue growing in some odd directions. They were pretty awesome... and they attracted a bit of attention when they glowed in blacklight ;)

my g/f had one when we met, she would always click it around and it really bugged me. she got sick of it too and took it out. 3 years later she still has a hole. My buddy got one and one night when he was drunk he started sucking dick! not really, but he did fall and break his 2 front teeth from the ball. do what you think is cool. just remember you can take the ring out for free, but it's expensive to fix your teeth

I agree with you. Told him he was a dickhead... but some people reckon it's terrific - women especially. (Photo really doesn't have the same effect as seeing it in person - whether the effect is good or bad)

I've known a few people who had theirs pierced, and ALL of them ended up with some sort of weird habit that they got from the stud/barbell- either they were always clicking/playing with it, or their speech changed enough so that anyone who spoke to them had to notice that they had something in their mouth all the time.
