The SR-71 only does 3.2 mach which is 2193.167 mph and the X-15 does mach 6.72 which is 4520 mph. Its ceiling is 166.000 ft on the SR-71 and the X-15 is maxium ceiling is 354.000 ft. But the difference between the two is the SR-71 is a jet plane and the X-15 is a rocket plane.

So we are talking rockets now, not planes? But comparing convetional aircraft, the SR-71 would be very hard to beat. If you're talking rockets and speed, I go for Voyager. BTW, imagine what is flying that we don't know about....

"When the SR-71 was retired in 1990, one Blackbird was flown from its birthplace at United States Air Force Plant 42 in Palmdale, California, to go on exhibit at what is now the Smithsonian Institution's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia. On 6 March 1990, Lt. Col. Raymond "Ed" E. Yeilding and Lt. Col. Joseph "Jt" T. Vida piloted SR-71 S/N 61-7972 on its final Senior Crown flight and set four new speed records in the process."
