I like the idea of the S54 clown shoe, the E46 doesn't sound bad either. My odd ball choice would be the S2k, but I love those too much. I would not go with the 1st gen CTS-V though. The power and drivetrain are great, and it is a very fun car. Every one that I have seen come into the dealership ALWAYS had exterior and interior panels falling off, even the clean ones had rattly sideskirts. Not to mention the 1st gen interiors absolutely blow. C5 or a GTO would be 10 times better choices in that segment. You could probably stretch to a C5 Z06, but do be warned a lot of stupid little things do like to go wrong in the way of trim fitting. That could mean water leaks and that is no bueno. C5's are the most comfy vettes though and much more comfy than the Cadillac.

Eric, MY 2003 were the only ones with factory M-tech kits (M5 look-alike body kit, M Parallel rims) :D

the maint. on an E46 you can do yourself, its all no different than reg. M50 crap. of all the S54 valve adj. I have done over the last 5 years, I have had like 2valves that actually need an adjustment.
me personally, i would go with a 5th gen. vette, but thats cause they are a whole lot more "exotic" here in Germany.
Ahh good news from an experienced tech. I really think I'm going to go for the e46 m3.

Of all of the cars suggested in this thread I only have firsthand knowledge of the E46 M3 so I'll comment only on those. Mainly I would worry about maintenance costs. Every 15k miles or less you have to get an oil service with 10w-60 Motorsport oil that is pricey. Every 30k miles you have to do an Inspection 1(oil/filter/valve adjustment etc). Every 60k miles an Inspection 2 is due which is everything in the Inspection 1 plus diff oil, air filter, & spark plugs. Brakes are pretty expensive. You already said 3 pedals is a must, I agree. SMG is kinda cool but if the car is out of warranty, is $$$ to diagnose and repair. Almost everything else is standard E46(pretty basic). I was looking at some M3's around $20K but most had high miles, accidents, no maintnenace history etc.
I ended up getting an E30 M3 instead, but it isn't for daily driving....YMMV

    STi transmissions are bullet proof.

If the the E46 issues arent a big deal i would go for it. Its probably just as fun to drive as the c5 but more spacious and a ballin interior

WHy not take your engine out and put it into another e30. Save the money, take out a loan for school...?

g35s are great cars... I know it's fairly slow but you could get a good deal on one.
