I have no problem with automatics. It's just if you get an older S-10 with a 2.8 or 4cly. It will be kind of slow...

A s10 ex cab, 2wd and a 5spd would be a good option and what I would be looking for in his situation

I have had an 99 cheroke 4.0 auto for 3 years. Took it to florida with me when I lived there for a year. Failed to start on me once in the driveway. It was the cps, easy fix and back on the road. Also has manual shifting 4x4 and permanent locked hubs, so the 4x4 systems never fail.

My brother has a 95 Ranger, 5 speed, and its one of the biggest POS i've ever had the joy of driving. No power in gears 1, 3, 4, 5, and second gear is useless for anything above 17mph.

I have a fiend with an 01 ranger 3.0 5 speed, lifted 5in pushing 33s on stock gears. Gets the hell beat out of it and runs great with 225k on it.

The jeep 4.0 is a legendary motor, and if you are lucky you may find one with a 5 speed like I did too.


and with all the money you saved cause these things sell for pretty much nothing, you can "stance" them out like this

yeah the 4l60 in the s10 are not that bad the all go to shit at some point but mostly due to people not maintaining them and keeping the fluid and filters fresh.

If you do with that if an when it dies get a rebuilt one with the indestructible 4l80 guts in it, and you will be set

So you're looking at the 82-93 body style? There should be a good market with them out in Cali cause of the mini truck scene. Plus they are an easy truck to work on.

XJ Cherokee, the most practical beast you could get. I was never impressed by any S-10, granted they are pretty stout, everything about them always made me feel eh. I have heard of XJ Cherokees going 300k on the auto without ever having a fluid change. Parts are everywhere and the 4.0 is more stout than any M30.
