I had a really hard time finding my V6 4x4 5 speed s10, registered as a s15. Awsome truck. Rode like shit, super loud, got through anything I wanted it to. The 4.3 vortec was torquey and reliable. Got it lifted with mudders, 143k, needed a slave cylinder ($40) $1300

4 cyl s10's are garbage, less torque than a powerwheel.

Xj's are amazing for the price and how rugged they are. Had a little lift on mine and it did its job for a long time.

Plenty of Cherokees around here for that price. I think that's probably gonna be my choice.

They're ridiculously abundant in the sierras.

If you get an older chevy, gmc, oldsmobile. Maket sure its a 94 or older. The EGR valves like to go in 95+'s, which set off CEL's making it difficult to get an inspection. EGR valves are expensive ($250+ even used)/

you really cant go wrong with an XJ. We had three down at the deer lease for several years, you cant hurt'em. Easy to mod and super reliable engines, its a "straight six" thing.

So XJ's are badass and bulletproof? Will they withstand going in and out of construction sites and 10k + miles a month? Any problem areas to look for?

XJ or Toyota Tacoma is your best bet, My uncle just picked up a 2005 Dodge ram 2500 for 5 grand, but your not looking for a full size anyway.

For a little bit more money you can have
                          1996 Chevy Tahoe 2 door

Roomier than jeep and more powa.. Enough power to tow an e30 inside an enclosed trailer.

This isn't mind but I had a lifted one. 9 inch lift with 35s. Probably buy another one again later down the line.

yeah, the early model abs systems sucked really bad, but they have a lifetime warranty recall on them. But like all other things it can be upgraded from a newer model. Mine was a 1989, took it straight to the dealer and they replaced the master cylinder for free. construction sites shouldn't be problem, but be warned they have a bumpy ride in dry rutted up areas. The deer lease I was on was very sloppy during the wet/ winter months and we seemed to crawl thru just about anything with ease. 10k miles a month, you'll hate your fuel bill.

That is the ZJ, the grand cherokee, those have electrical gremlins iirc
