This is the answer. They give great pedal feel and the lack of an oversized heal makes movement great.

Also, they make great boating shoes too, nice and tactile when working aloft and standing on ropes.

I wear Onitsuka Tigers and they are not technically driving shoes but for inexpensive shoes they are pretty comparable.

those are nice.
converse will work well. i really like driving in them because there is almost no shoe between your feet and the pedals.
