You will note the 2 is not "in" the parentheses, it is outside the parentheses. You are most definitely not using PEDMAS here, you are applying some other rule.

Nowhere in PEDMAS does it mention distribution. It does state you must perform the operations inside the parentheses first. It does not say perform the operation inside the parentheses and any adjacent operations first.

Seems like it, though I would have bet against it when it first started. The lack of scientific rigor is amazing. Some people want to treat it as a fraction for crying out loud.

                    Ugh....

Anyone else take highschool algebra? Order of operations makes the answer undeniable. Parenthesis first, then the outside operations.

92 people failed middle school algebra. Whatever is inside the parentheses comes first then you return to the left.

                      48/2(9+3)
                      48/2(12)
                      24(12)
                      288

288 is the answer and there is no doubt about it.

you have to get rid of the parentheses first that is order of operations

                          48/2(9+3)
                          48/2(12)
                          48/24
                          2

I aced all algebra and calculus through highschool tested out of it for college. but then again im just an artist.

No. Multiplication and division are equal in the order of operations.

So you do the parenthesis, then work your way out. AKA distribute

                            And get 2

The answer is 2. Parenthesis first, the you get 48/24 = 2.

I am sorry but you are wrong. Just plain wrong. You only have to do what is INSIDE of parentheses first. After that, 2(12) is the same as 2*12 in which case 48/2 comes before in the order of operations.

2 of my calculators and Google give 288. Google is quite possibly the most accurate and powerful computing machine on the planet. Can you imagine how fucked up things would be if every computer was wrong on this?

Just throw in the towel gentlemen. Those of you saying that the answer is 2 are just wrong.
