    Ok
Like others have stated .22lr. GET A BOLT GUN, learn and practice the fundamentals of marksmanship. It takes a ton of practice to perfect and do it right, once you think you have it keep practicing before you try and move up as the further out you try and go the level of complication gets much harder. I still bust out my ol .22 and shoot a brick thought it before I break out the big toys, when I have not shot in a while. As 18 bucks on 500 22lr is better than 85+ cent a pop .308 match ammo to get back in practice

      nah, that's a BB gun. [/sarcasm]

but seriously, a .22 is all you need to learn how to shoot with. As everyone has said, it is way more fun to go to the range, shoot for a few hours and have only spent $20 versus shooting for ten minutes and being out $50 in ammo.

My first ever gun was a BB gun, still have it. Then a plethora of shotguns before buying my AR, then my Ruger, selling Ruger, buying Savage, then my Springfield

I think 300 might be a stretch... Lol. Sold the ruger to pay for the savage. Sold the AR to pay for the springfield

shooting clays is probably the most fun you can have with a gun, imo

and I prefer plinking with a bb gun over a 22, because the bb's knock the cans over instead of ripping straight through

plus you don't have the noise, which isn't all that much with a 22, but still

Good rifle no doubt but not really the best for a beginner to start out with. The punishing recoil will pound the shit outta new shooter and just discourage them. As you will have to tear off your shoulder to get even close to decent

as stated, a 1022 is a great starter long rifle. There are TONS of customizing options and ammo doesn't get any cheaper. If you wanna take a step up, I'd suggest finding a used .223 mini-14 on gunbroker.com. A little more expensive but they're reliable, very customizable, and can be converted to .22 should you choose to go back to something a little cheaper to shoot.
