I have never know a "good" running VW product that was post mid 80's, aside from the 95 Jetta but I totalled that after only a few months... new driver syndrome.

I had a friend with a Mk3 Golf that stalled in the middle of an intersection and she got t-boned... totaled the car.

You do what you want with your money, Im just saying that from my personal experience modern VW/Audi cars have more problems than its worth.

Our autotragic Golf 2.0 used to lock up in park. Real nice when you're trying to get home at 3am. Figured out it was the switch that unlocked the parking brake when the brake was engaged. Faulty design. I hate VW electrical systems.

my freinds VW's tranny let go. At 50k miles. Normal driving.
My uncle used to race VW's (isnt that an oxymoron?), and he is now looking at BMW's, since his car would spend one weekend on track, 2 weeks in the garage.
Basically, doing anything but driving a VW at grandma speeds is inviting an expensive repair.

Do you still go to school in Boston? I live about 45 mins south of Boston and the guy at the end of my street is selling a pretty nice, late 80's quattro coupe. No idea about price or miles or anything, I could get that info for you if you want, just PM me.

i owned an audi for 6 months.... 1994 audi 90 cs sport... it was a great car!!!!
i got to work on it a ton

i replaced the starter (twice) used one crapped out after a week
                  ignition switch
                  center differential
                  exhaust manifold
                  both exhaust manifold gaskets
                  and a motor mount
                  plus some other random bullshit
                  EGR didn't work properly
                  MAF sensor replaced
                  O2 sensors took a shit

there was a short in the wiring as well.... whenever in reverse it would blow a fuse.... that fuse controlled the heated seats, guage cluster, fog lights.... anyway the wires had completly broken in half at a flex point for the trunk.

My brother has a 2001 audi s4.... thats a wonderful car as well
you reaplce a control arm on one of those things every year or two
both of his motor mounts were broken (only $160 a piece and book time of 7 hours or so to do both of them)

anyway he went to do emissions on it and it failed... the MIL was on... turns out his check engine light was not operating, and it has ~6 hard faults stored. pretty sure previous owner removed the check engine light or his repair shop did because they couldnt fix the problem

My neighbor had an 92 quattro sedan.. every weekend he was working on something under the hood. He straight up told me not to evey buy an Audi.

One of my friends had the same model Audi given to him buy his uncle. Didn't even get it home before it died on him and he towed it home. He is also fixing something on it atleast every other weekend.

If you're looking for an AWD late 80's - early 90's european car why not buy an iX? From what I understand BMW's AWD system was superior to the Audi Quattro system during that period.

I severly doubt that the IX system was better at the time. Im NOT looking for a late 80's early 90's euro, but a 2001 audi. Im also not looking for everyones neighbors and sisters audi stories.

it's better than the early quattros (the ones with the manual locks), but later 90's quattors are better (with torsen or whatever diffs they have). the problem with the ix center diff is all the rear wheel's power has to go through the viscous clutch (losing power), although the fronts are driven directly via the chain. on the other hand the power to weight and overall performance of the ix is far superior.. check any comparison articles written at the time.

I wouldn't say one drivetrain is more reliable than the other though. I know I've had my share of problems (good thing the rest of this car is solid!)

trust me I have been down the Audi road and saw the light and it said "bmw my son, bmw!"
You saw that light too? I thought it was just the drugs I was on at the time... Interesting car story (well to me)...

                            * Second car - '95 VW Jetta - not a bad car really... was a base model so not much could go wrong.
                            * Third car - brand new 2000 VW Golf 1.8T. window regulators broke 600 miles away from warranty expiration. Driving at 60 mph and the passenger side window just dropped like a stone inside the door. Fun!
                            * Fourth car - brand new 2002 Audi TT. Worst car ever. Had it for 10 months. Replaced window regulators about 10 times under warranty, 7 in a matter of 6 weeks. Sued Audi under lemon law and won.
                            * BMWs ever since... aside from minor oil gasket leak problems, no other problems except for the ones that I made for myself.

BMWs aren't perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but if you are looking for something that can handle bad weather, get a Jeep or something. Audi quattros suck and that is from personal experience. S4 can lick my testies... all three of them.

edit: plus internet community support for VW/Audi sucks.
Not really part of the same argument here. If you take the plunge and buy a jeep... don't get a cherokee. Hell, don't buy a jeep. period.

But I whole-heartedly agree with all the other VW/Audi bashers here. THe electronics suck. If you must get one... by all means, get a warranty that covers EVERYTHING.

at work i have had an a6 come in with a bad timing belt roller.... lucky the timing belt didn't slip

i've had an a6 with less than 50k on it come in with a seized water pump, again lucky the timing belt hadn't jumped

my friend had a t-belt tensioner fall off of his a4 the day after he bought it with 60k on it.... $2k later, and a week or so he was back on the road

numerous a4's with leaking cam seals

                              tons of missfire issues....

i'm not saying audi makes a bad car.... hell all manufacturers have problems, just parts, and service for audi cars tend to be on the high side... i would def recomend a car with a warranty

While I had no issues with my mk3 GTI, I had nothing but problems with my 98.5 A4 1.8T. Oh god, that thing was a piece of shit. Bought it with 45,000 miles on it, had it for about 5 months and it was in the shop at least twice a month under warranty. Warranty was set to expire and I got real nervous and flipped it for something else.

It was always really stupid shit too. For instance, I was on my way home from work, cruising down the highway doing about 65mph and listening to some music. All of the sudden, the sunroof decides to open(all the way) and I cant close it, the dial spins but nothing happens.

It was mid-December, snowing, and I was about 10 miles from home...

I will never buy an Audi again. I even have a good friend that is a service writer at Carousel. He wont even buy an Audi....
