We have a 2000 Passat, 2002 A3 and a 2005 Passat. All are fun to drive very nicely appointed & ergonomically easy to use and I like them very much. The 2000 Passat is about to leave as it is time for it to go but it has 97k kilometers and has been trouble free.

My mom has a VW. The door has a 1'x1' spot of HEAVY rust on it, there is a rattle from the valvetrain, the 1st, 2nd, AND 3rd gear synchros are almost gone, the interior rattles like the door panels are about to fall off, etc... It's a 1998 with 70k miles on it. I LOVE THAT CAR! Let's not forget the TERMINAL UNDERSTEER, throttle on understeer, the about .6gs it pulls on the skidpad, the fact that it gets worse gas mileage than my E30 while also running a god knows how much longer 1/4. I know it's literally 7 seconds slower in the 0-60. JESUS H CHRIST.
I know you didn't mean for this to be a hate VW thread, but it is one. That's because VWs suck friggin nuts, as does audi. Audis plow just as hard, and fall apart just as fast. Simple fact: VAG does not know how to build a car. They just don't. Everyone knows it. Honda can build a reliable, quality, even fun to drive FWD economy car. The jetta is a failure even at that.
Please don't submit to those money pit maintenence nightmares.

Can't say I have any complaints about my VW. It's cheap, reliable, and is great for shattering egos at autocrosses. No suprise though that most of the complaints seem to be from people with mk3's and newer. They just aren't anywhere near as robust as the old mk1's and mk2's.
