The last beating I got ended with me tossing dad out the door, and ending in a fist fight on the lawn. This was after working construction all summer with him. We were about equal in strength and size at that point so it ended in a stale mate and that was it after that[/quote]
............man, this happened to me too. I was a dumb hard headed teenager.

slaps, spankings, beatings as needed. wish more parents did the same so we wouldn't have so many little shit head bastards running around. i'm only 26 and i still want to punch some parents/kids in the face these days for the way they act.

I was spanked/hit a bit much as a kid. Not nearly as much as some of you fella's.

I spank my boy when he does something wrong but never more than 1 solid swat and then a time out. Followed promptly by telling him I love him and why he got a swat. I think I mostly tell him to look me in the eyes and I let him know what he's doing is wrong and ask him if he wants a swat. He's a good boy and only 2.

I'll say it out right. A lot of what's described here has less to do with parenting and more to do with your parent's wanting to make themselves feel better. There's no excuse for hitting a child in anger. Ever. Even if my boy does something drastically wrong I'll put him in a time out and come up when I'M ready to discipline him. There's also nothing wrong with spanking your kids. But, there's a stark difference in spanking and beating the piss out of them. Half of the time the tone in your voice will make a kid stop dead in their tracks.

Ah well. You all lived as did I and we're better for it, right? Just don't do the same to your kids or at least in the same fashion.

I was never spanked, or beaten in any way really. Once my dad pulled my hair for not giving him the TV remote, think I was about 7. He is a moody fuck that loses his temper over nothing on a regular basis.

I lived with my mom for most of my childhood and through highschool. I did some dumb things, and got lectured a lot. She is very good at communicating. I could always tell that I'd disappointed her, and that in itself was enough to make me rethink my actions. I was a(nd still am) a good kid and she knew it.

I was never really disrespectful to her, because she was respectful to me.

I think the best part of her parenting was letting me learn from my mistakes, and letting me know what I'd done wrong, instead of beating me after making that mistake.

I got suspended from school in grade 3 (8 y/o) for stabbing a kid in the chest with the tip of a pencil. He was being an asshole to me. I never got beaten. She listened to what I had to say, and that was that.

I got suspended in grade 8 (13 y/o) for spraying cleaning solution into a girls fish bowl (class project), well the fish died. When I was talking to the principal (a small man, who I'd love to have a talk with today 9 years later...) I laughed nervously and said I didn't think the spray would kill the fish...Anyways, no punishment, told her what happened she said I was an idiot for doing it and that was that.

Suspended twice in highschool for smoking pot. Nothing.

I skipped class like no one's business. She actually called in or gave me a note so I wouldn't get forced into lunch time DT. "Just don't fail your classes" was all I got. I graduated as an underachiever.

Almost got expelled for bringing an airsoft to school. Had a cop show up at my house, fun times. I got a good lecture.

          tl:dr
          I <3 my mom.

I used to get a belt, a hand or a 5 gallon paint stick. That last one hurt like hell.

My mom ( black ) and my dad ( irish ) met in the Army. Up until I was 8, savage ass beatings. Anything they can find. My mom and dad split, and after that my mom could not give two fucks. "Do what you want, don't flunk, don't go to jail, and don't get anyone pregnant" Mantra I lived by. Got suspended a few times, wrecked her car, beat up a few people, broke a dude's shoulder, no fucks given. She even apologized for all of the beatings she gave me, saying she was wrong for it. when I was 20, I saw my dad for the first time after 12 long years where I needed him. A quick right hook put him on his ass and showed him how I felt.

THIS, I used to get my ass beat as a child (belt, paddle or otherwise) and swore Id never spank my kids that way. My kids are 11 and 13 and I can count the spanking there were so few. Tone of the voice is a strong thing. When my boy was 12 he buffed up to his mother with me standing there. I bear hugged his ass threw him out the back door on to the grass and told him theres no room in this house for that kind of bullshit disrespect. I made him go stand alone in the dark (we live in the sticks) and closed the door for a little while, just long enough to make him think about what he did. They've turned out to be pretty good kids so far, man I think about the shit I used to get into when I was 13 !!

And it is abuse, striking a child is physical abuse. That's not opinion, that's factual definition.

Yeah I agree about the tone of voice stuff... I fear my Dad for that reason. I am a good kid, but he goes off about really dumb stuff. I remember about a year ago he got so pissed at my brother and I he yelled at us for an hour. His voice was horse for the next two days, lol

Right, because speaking out against abusing your child isn't acceptable when the majority think it's a reasonable form of punishment, you're an idiot.

So as long as the scale of the physical pain administered falls within the spectrum of the norm it's considered discipline and anything beyond that is abuse? Bullshit, look up the definition of child abuse as causing physical pain is in there. Something being accepted as the norm does not make it right.

So here is a question to go with this: how many of you actually like the company of your parents?
I thoroughly enjoy the company of my parents. I didn't as a kid/teen because of course I thought it was lame, but growing up opens your eyes a bit more.

Looking back, I deserved most of the shit I've done. It was usually punishment for things I thought I could get away with. :p

The day I crawled up on the hood of my dad's 240sx to get my kite. That day all hell broke loose. Hah, today I understand.
We got taught our lesson, but never in the head or bruises and stuff. I did lots of dumb shit looking back.

I got punished by my own stupidity though, like when we had one of those ski sleighs with a steering wheel, I ran it down a slope and flew thru a fence at like 40mph. Or after a nice summer rain, someone yelled the pizza guy came so I jumped on my bike and went downhill, right turn at 40mph again and it slipped and I slid onto one of the driveways. Or beating our bodies trying to jump 15 stacked bricks when the jump was maybe 2ft high.

So getting your ass whipped with a stick is nothing to be sad about when you're used to much bigger pain.

Had I sat playing SNES my whole childhood, than yea, an asswhoop would've felt like I needed a month in the hospital.

You claim my parents did not teach me humility, I feel no need to be humble towards this topic or this discussion. Feeling obliged to keep your mouth shut for fear of upsetting someone or speaking out is not a positive trait, sorry if you're deluded enough to think that.
