since you're broadcasting from a hacked device, the FCC could become involved.

my ex had this installed on her brand new accord. she didnt really change her driving habits and she got the 30% discount.

    i would never do this.

Yep. Just a matter of time before other companies pick this up. Not as a way for you to save money but as a way to penalize you.

lol I love you too kershaw

No its not going to happen tomorrow, or likely to happen via free market, but the feds and various state govts have been kicking the idea around to force you to install similar yet GPS based devices in all cars so they can TAX us more. How big of a leap is it to think they will then sell that data to the insurance outfits generate more income.

Was there not a big stink in the early 90's when electronic tolling started to get popular where tickets were issued via elapsed time between toll points, from the I-pass/ez pass systems and the insurance outfits wanted access to that information as well.....

that shit failed a year (or two, whenever it was) ago.

it will fail if they ever bring it up again.

electronic tolling is great. i dont understand anyone's issue with it. the only thing it saves is time. so what if it kills a few jobs. i love my ez pass. love love love love love.

Yes 5/2011 is a long time ago, CBO says its doable and good idea

Forget the gas tax, time for a driving tax? The government may charge motorists for each mile traveled as higher fuel economy is translating into a shortfall in the nation's highway budget.

There was a big debate a few years ago in houston where they were going to use the highway speed antenna info to issue speeding tickets to those with ez tags, like mrs leeve was talking about.

Yes. FCC. And even insurance fraud. They got ya by the short and curlies, there.......

I am sure these devices are broadcasting. Highly unlikely you are going to your local agent and uploading the information on a weekly or monthly basis.

                      Here we go:

Small enough to fit in the palm of a hand, Snapshot plugs into a car's on-board diagnostic port, usually under the dash. Computer chips collect and store the time of day the car is operating, as well as speed -- factors that determine how many miles are driven and if the driver is making sudden stops. The data are sent to Progressive via wireless technology, and users can view their results almost instantly on a website. People who drive fewer miles and less aggressively can get discounts of up to 30% in as soon as 30 days. Permanent discounts can be locked in after six months, after which customers return the devices to the Cleveland-based insurer.

                      Source:
Progressive's perky sales clerk Flo will push a new in-car product the company claims will be as transformative for insurance as the iPod was for music.

So yes, I am sure tampering would amount to federal charges and insurance fraud.

Seems like the program could work well.. I like how it is only to take a snapshot and then no longer need the big brother.. supposedly.

Thats great. Get better gas milage. Pay more taxes. Fuck bitches.

Reminds me of this: There was a water shortage in denver a few years ago so they urged people to conserve water. Well the population did such a good job doing it. To reward them they raised the water rates to make up for the lost income. WTF!

yup since the the great rescission has been going on people are not driving as much, laid off dont have to go to work every day. getting cooned into buying new gas saving cars by the govt cash for clunkers. Urged to drive less and use less fuel to save the environment...

now they need to make up the income because we are not having to buy as much gas...... law of unintended consequences

So all the people with jailbroken iphones are going up against federal charges too? Give me a break. I think you're over-selling that a bit.

Insurance fraud? You're not making a false claim.

You just have to be clever in how you'd get around it. How I could envision the hack working is that you is that you could capture the data streaming from your OBD port - and then go on a nice easy drive. The once you have that data, build a microcontroller that would feed the "snapshot" device this data, over and over again. So while you are out driving aggressively, the "snapshot" thinks you're drive like an old lady - and it will do it's thing sending it's data. No "hacking" the device. No FCC problems.

Reason to have an OBD I car. Screw big brother, I don't concede to be monitored, and if I have an OBD II car an I'm in an accident you don't have permission to datalog my car's black box.
