Spoke to an uber nerd friend of mine about this and turns out he's quite versed in it but it just never came up before.

From him, first off it's not the seedy underground dug-trafficking-child-molesting circus that people initially think it is. It is for the most part filled with information that only a computer can make sense of and is utterly useless to us, there's also HUGE amounts of data to be found. Access to research centre's, schools, archives, museums, libraries...all of that is part of the "deep web". Basically it's all the information that is not linked to or accessible by mainstream search engines, most of it would be extremely boring to you and I.

The anonymity of it has allowed criminals to use it as a forum for doing business, so the bad is there if you want to find it. I was told explicitly, don't let curiosity get you. Most of us are not well versed in protecting our identities as it is, considering we've already sold everything to Facebook. Visiting these seedy areas of the deep web makes you a target for people who know how to take advantage of the ignorant looky-loo's. So if you don't know exactly what you're doing, don't play with fire.

That about sums up what I learned tonight. All in all, not somewhere I feel the need to visit. Although there being huge's amounts of NASA data intrigues me. Really goes to show you how intertwined with our lives technology has gotten though.

If you are really that interested yet scared go buy a old pc for $50 uninstall all and install linux cos it is free put some free anti virus and firewall that shit then have fun. If the box gets infected wipe it and start again.
