because no one had the idea for a tablet pc before then...
The document describes a proposed design for a tablet computer called the "Tablet: The Personal Computer of the Year 2000" from researchers at the University of Illinois. The tablet is envisioned as a portable notebook-sized device with a high-resolution touchscreen interface that can be used with a stylus to write and draw directly on the screen. It would run a variety of applications through touchscreen icons and menus. The goal is to combine the flexibility of pen and paper with the power of computation and communication in a lightweight, easy to use format.

It's the perfect thing to take to class and take notes, never having to worry about plugging in to a socket. It does the R3v, and every other website just fine. It has USB plugs, so I can plug an external hard drive into it.
It also has an SD, and MicroSD card reader built in. So when I'm out and about with either the Gopro, or the T2i, I can just pull the memory card out of the camera, put it in the tablet, and "Oh hey, these shots look fantastic". I don't have to lug around a laptop that's considerably bigger that only has 2 hours of charge to empty out my full SD cards. I did not buy this tablet for this purpose, I had it before both of the cameras. It was just a handy thing instead of buying a shit ton of SD cards.
They have their purpose. Some people think that all computers need to do everything. Quite frankly, if the surface has a great battery life. Even if it's a core i3 processesor, chances are I will be buying it purely on that aspect and replace my tf101 with it.
To each their own though.

You're thinking of the GRiDPad.
the 1989 MS-DOS OG tablet.
4.5 lbs, 10mhz processor, 2 MB of system memory.
