Bikes have these cool features on them, on the right hand side of the handle there's this little analog device that allows you to meter out how much power the engine is providing at any given time. It's pretty badass.

Yes, a litrebike will run you into the back of a parked car faster. It won't make you swing too wide on a turn into oncoming traffic, dump you on wet leaves or have a car turn in front of you at a light because they weren't looking any more than a 600 though.

Mitigate risk. Wear your helmet, dummy. Wear a jacket with a proper CE backpad, wear gloves. Wear boots if you like your ankles.

But I took beginner and advanced courses before I started, read books and practiced the techniques, went to open backroads to practice threshold braking, etc. I wanted to become a competent rider.

It's mostly because the mindset of guys that want to immediately go to a 1000, is that they don't want to learn how to ride, they want to go 150+ as cheaply as possible.

I bought the R1 from a friend because it was a good deal.

Start riding with proper riders, it's like a 16 year old learning to drive for the first time going out with a bunch of street racers...smrt. You'll pick up more skills, learn to keep your ass safe and most of all, you won't end up a douche like your buddy.

Maybe its because I'm 30 but I gear the fuck up for every ride and I don't feel the desire to ride like a douche on the street.

To the OP, you mentioned wanting a Buell initially. I am biased, since I own three, but I love them, and they are a completely, totally, entirely different riding experience than being on a Jap I-4 bike. The torque is incredible on a Buell V-twin, you shift, or need to shift, far less, you rev far lower, but IMHO with more sould than with a bike that only hits its sweet spot at a rev level higher than the Buell's redline. The Buell XB bikes and their older brothers were born from a Harley V-twin tradition, and that gives the bikes a very different feeling, sound, flow. In between the Buells and the I-4 would be a newer Buell, the 1125, which was only produced for a couple of years (2008 and 2009 primarily). Those are water-cooled V-twins, unlike the older air-cooled Buells, and would be closer to an Aprilia or a Ducati.

I would strongly urge you to wear gear - ATGATT, or All the Gear, all the time. You will not feel immune from harm if you wear gear, so if you have a modicum of sense and you wear gear, you will still ride responsibly and have a ton of fun, but without the extremes of injury that will surely happen if you go down without protection.

Enjoy it, go try to find hills and twisties, and ride as if you were invisible and as if everyone on the road were out to kill you - it's basically the way it is.

Personally, though, I enjoy speed on a slower bike, wringing everything it has out of it, rather than never hitting close to the limits of a bike like a liter bike.

Oh, and maintaining and fixing a Buell XB or older is comparable to having an e30 or older vs. a new BMW. It's very basic, and owner-friendly. Hydraulic lifters, so never any valve adjustments (like the M42). Did I mention I love my Buells?
