"new" s2000

Why do the new s2000's only make 237 HP and go to 8k rpm? What happened to 9?

Are we talking about the 2.2liter engine? They tried to raise the torque on the engine by raising the displacement because apparently it was too much of a driver's car for your average joe, and some of the powerband was compromised.

That's absolutely correct. I remember reading an article about that displacement bump the S2000 got. It seems the typical poser didn't like reving the engine much when cruising to their favorite 'hoitie-toitie' hangout......so in predictable Honda-esque fashion they listened to the masses (not the enthusiasts) and made the engine more 'friendly' for the lesser skilled by giving it a bit more low-end grunt and lowering the redline.

Having never driven an S2000, I don't know how significant of a difference this made to the overall character of the car. I have been to a couple of HPDEs where S2000s were running and even in modestly skilled hands its a quick car. I'd consider one if I could afford it.

its so true, one of the very few 4bangers that sound amazing to me. And the handling is rather sublime... fun fucking cars imo.

I also heard of some sort of issue with the head on the 2.0, can't really confirm it though as I dont follow that crowd.

They did make the new one more 'streetable', but every review i've read said its better on the track too. Besides, 8200 or whatever is still fucking screaming for a street motor.

in this case as most, "streetable" just means that shitty drivers ie. women can drive the car easier. i have driven both, and as an enthusiast driver, my vote still goes to the 9k rpm motor...

Same. I recently watched a Best Motoring DVD where they compred the two models on the track, and the new one did better.

0.97 seconds better... i guess the numbers tell the truth. but it wouldnt change my mind, esp since a 1st gen can be had for about $10-15K less than a new one...LOL

The car didn't lose any power, and now appears to have more of an actual power band as opposed to an on/off switch.

uh, the US is the only country (I think) that got the 2.2 liter engine (8k rpm redline). Europe, and I think Japan, got the same 2.0 liter engine (9k rpm redline) in the AP2 new body work. Europe and other places tax cars on engine displacement, so the 2.0 liter engine would equal less tax.

It looks like in that review both tachs go to 9k.

I wanted a 2.0 liter s2000 so badly before I got the e30, but I couldn't justify selling my new jetta for a used s2k, so I got the e30 to work and beat on. One day I will have that s2k.

MCR=Matchless crowd racing, a japanese r&d/tuning garage that does a majority of their tests on the wangan. I would rather have a first gen s2000, it had a pure image when it was first designed.
