Living in the middle of the action and getting hooked up with a local outfit in a well service roustabout or similar position will require some longer days, but would be home most nights. They have a little different rotation than I do as well.

Yeah living in MT is a very expensive proposition in most of the mountain west, unless your an hour outta town and off grid, or live in a little shit box in town Now Eastern MT and like the Gfalls area its much cheaper, you are still trying to find some kind of good employment. This is assuming you can find some kind of decent paying employment. As the invasion from the cities and the left coast has all but shut down most of the good paying jobs in the west, Timber, Mining, and Smelting. Most of the locals where I am at with his skill set are working 2 or 3 7 dollar an hour service sector jobs.

I would stay south of the Mason-Dixon line unless you are talking about somewhere in the Rockies/Montana, or maybe Portland.

My wife and I would love to go to Montana, Nashville or similar. But we've accepted that we will basically never be able to move.
While "customer service" is a widely applicable job skill, my biggest asset lies in the powersports industry. i have worked with alot of people, done a lot of projects. For example I have worked with Adam Canni and his chopper he built for Metric Revolution. I also worked on a project for Disney supplying them with Busa motors for their stunt cars and building motards for Hollywood Studios theme park

If you can get a mechanical engineering degree/certification there are plenty of repair shops out here.

Huh? You don't need an ME degree to work in a repair shop.

Colorado is a great place to live. However, the cost of living is pretty high.

Says the guy that lives 12 minutes from the Canadian border...

New Mexico I am sure can get "cold" but I doubt that it gets Arctic cold very often.

OP, Do you value climate? what else are you into?

I wont suggest you migrate to Canada, but many of the northern states are pretty sweet if you Don't mind having seasons. I honestly don't know which have the best prospect for work in your field though.

                    However,

Like Farbin Said, in the north there is Year round power sports, and like Sleeve said, the Oil Patch makes the money.

In my experience (both in cold climates, and oil patch experience) they go together like Rye and Coke (literally) Oil boys like their toys. look at the Oil hot-spots and follow the money, contact the power-toy shops in the areas that have the oil, and conversely happen to be in location acceptable to you to live.

                    Boom, there you go.

I won't go as far as to give an endorsement to move to this area, but you would be amazed at how much money is floating around all of a sudden. The gas wells have started to flow and manufacturing industries are busy as hell.
