Yes, I've been to an independent running shoe store and bought the "right" shoes. I've also read Chi Running, and now I hurt more than ever! I think that I think about my form too much now, and it's all gone to crap.

I also use the rolling pin on my shins, and do exercises to strenghten my ankles/shins, but I still get them every time I run. I can hardly walk after a 5k.

I've resulted to swimming as much as possible (swam in HS) to stay in shape, then just bang out a 1.5 mile run every 6mo and hurt for a week afterwards. I'd like to drop my time down into the 10 minute mark (11:30 now) but it just hurts too much to try.

This results in your beats per minute at rest being lower, you having more energy all the time, and your heart lasting longer.

I ran track in middle school. Haha.

My job requires it though, so I do my 1.5 mile (got it down to 10:07 last eval), do my push ups and sit ups for the year. I need to start running consistently to maintain/better my time though.

I need to get back into it. Born to Run is a pretty fascinating book about humans and their history of running. I highly recommend it, and it will make you want to go run for sure.

I have to PT test for the AF, so running in a way is part of my job.
There's always a lot of confusion about this. First of all, people don't ever really get full-blown shin splints. That involves the muscles/tendons on the front of the tibia actually being slightly torn away and splintering the bone. Most people experience soreness from the early stages of what could become shin splints.
That said, it does really suck. I also had soreness in my shins for about two years and ran through the pain until it seemed really unhelpful. Then I saw a podiatrist, got orthotic inserts, and it helped immensely. That would be my advice to you.

I sprint. 400m and shorter. Just started running again a few days ago and my calves and feet still hurt. Lol Dorsey flexing sucks until you get back in shape. I have some motivation from my lil brother, although he's an elite high school sprinter at least I have goals. Albeit very high goals. I wish I ran in high school but basketball was my life back then.

And yes the shoes you wear make a world of difference. You need them depending on your feet, distance and style of running.(rather you under or over-pronate)

                        I used to get this.

I got the PROPER type of shoes ($$$) with adequate forefoot cushioning, and had to adjust my form when running.

also, proper stretching at the ankles before and after.

I'm a heavy guy, and I don't get them (knock on wood)

man, whatsup with all you young guys with bustass knees.

I competed in rugby, football and hockey thoughtout highschool and all of my college days.

I also competed in weighlifting/body building, bringing my knees through 500+lbs squats, up untill recently (stoped competing when 31y/o)

I combated joint pain with mass amounts of CLA (Conjugated linoleic acid) which helped with weight creep, and practically lubricates your joints.

                            I'm 33 now...still no knee pain.

I used to run several miles of x-country trails every day. Then I discovered that the reason I can't walk in the mornings is plantar fasciitis. I've stopped running (except for races) and now get my cardio through biking.

                              I miss running. A lot.

you have the wrong shoes, or you're running too fast and too far. 1 mile isn't very far to run (if you do it a lot), so that makes me thing wrong shoes and too fast. if you just went to walmart or whatever and bought some nikes or any random running shoe, that could be hurting you. if you go to an actual running store, they'll fit you to shoes made for the way you walk/run. more expensive but better than getting injured..

I haven't ran much lately, the weather here is pretty crummy right now and I can't stand treadmills, but my wife and I usually run 15-25 miles a week (and even more if we're training for a race). I get stuck with the 120lb stroller (two little boys), but it just means in a race I'm a lot faster than her. :p

I need to start again though, triathlon season begins in march and eventually I'd like to do a full marathon. I've done two 1/2 marathons so far. my wife just did her first 1/2 this year. I'm not very fast but I can run a fairly respectable time, under 2 hours for a 1/2. I'd like to do a full in under 4.
