I sold my early model 944 a little over a year ago to pay for school.
Parts are expensive, and the car was a bitch to work on (took me a little while to figure out what the fuck a torsion bar was), but it was a great driver.

I'd probably do it again if I were a 40+ year old man with much more disposable income than I do now.
Anyways, I mostly used pelicanparts and rennlist. I don't know about "best," but they suited my needs

Be prepared for 911 owners giving you shit for your "poor man's porsche" and front mounted watercooled engine

Oh, and I can't remember which parts they were exactly, but the 944 does share some parts with the VW super beetle that can be bought at slightly less inflated prices

I never really saw the point of going with a na 944 (thought I was also once interested in one too).

After I realized the setup was basically the same as my e30, I decided against it, esp. since parts were more pricey, and I already owned the e30.
If it's got tits or tires, it's gonna cost ya!

Here's a funny article on Jalopnik about 944's

Earlier today, we posted an AOTD headlined "Ten Nightmare Cars You Can't Resist" about cars we love but, for one reason or another, present some ownership challenges. This list included the Porsche 944, which pissed off Mr. Seven...

Thank's a lot! To everyone else, I let him drive my 325es whenever he wants, and my M3 when I'm in it, I'm not sure what else I can do to sway him into an e30... other than making him buy both ha!

As for people giving him shit about it not being this or that: hater's ganna hate. ;)

I thought we were talking about the 951, I revoke all previous comments. Buy an e30!
The non-turbo 3-liter S2 is damn close to the 951 in performance (and has the same front end and suspension/brakes/wheels, too, IIRC). A buddy of mine had one and it was an absolute blast to drive. That said, he would be the first to admit parts cost a fortune and it was a bitch of a car to service and repair.

Nice find looks like a very clean car, but seriously I don't know why people would say their a pain to work on. I mean ya there are some things that are hard to reach or tight but compared to any car now a days there a joy to work with. Hope your buddy enjoys the car for years to come and remind him to keep up with the timing belt every three years.

I've learned a few things about 944's these past few days.

3 grounds matter. 1 main for the harness, and 2 for the DME.

You cannot just remove the power steering pulley off the crank. It is required for proper function of the oil pump. We just spent a few hours trying to figure out why we were getting oil to the top end, but no real oil pressure on a gauge. Re-installed the P/S pulley onto the crank, and 5 bars of oil pressure.

Once you know the car, they aren't so bad to work on. That said, there are a ton of specific things that apply to this car. Out of 10 years of vehicle service, no other vehicle has had me scratching my head as much as this 951.
