Dude, look into the Canon EF-s 17-55mm. After multiplying by the crop factor, you end up with something equivalent to 28-88mm in standard 35mm. It makes an excellent walk around lens, especially since it's has a constant 2.8 aperture. Much better that your 18-55mm kit lens. I've taken anything from friends playing at a club with no flash to mountain scenes from the top of Mt Whitney.

Try borrowing or renting the lens you're interested in to try them out. Btw, there are a couple of these on craigslist for sale. Good luck! If you're around Berkeley sometime you're more than welcomed to try my lens.

I got the 40mm pancake coming in tomorrow, I'll let you know how it is, I've only heard great talk about it. Cheap too.

This review is nice because it compares it straight up against the 50mm and 35mm and gives some nice aperture comparison photos.

Stumbled across this, looks like a perfect travel lens in my opinion..

Yeah, I'm very interested on what you think of this lens... I'm not sure whether to get the 50mm or 40mm pancake...

You can stitch hand held too. I love full frame and a 28 1.8 for walking around... unfortunately there wasn't much too similar on crop frame. You're opening post is way too vague, everyone likes something different. Zoom, prime, close, wide.

Hand held 3 (I think) 28 1.8 shots on 5d2. If it were me with a crop camera walking around I'd probably sell it and a fuji x100 to travel with... Otherwise a small prime or two. A wide one and a 50.

X100 is a neat little rig, played with one a little while back. I would not trade my OMD for it as a small travel rig though.

OP there is always that idea, lugging a Full DSLR and kit around on vacation is going to PIA, sell all that shit and get your self a M4/3 from Pan or Oly, and get the OLY 12mm F2, the pan 20mm F1.7 and the Oly 45mm F1.8. all that with a few filters extra batteries, and other accessories you need in Med sized crumpler haven, that will sit in the bottom of your dally carry back pack and only take up a 1/3 of the space in the Main compartment

First of all. You must have a nifty fifty.

If money is tight. Go get the 1.8. It sounds like your just getting into your SLR ands this is an incredible learning lens. It takes good shots and you'll have tons of fun at f/1.8. Is the 1.4 worth it?! Fuck yeah. Don't be ignorant. Canon products are the jam and when you get comfortable with the 1.8 you might understand how wicked the 1.4 is but yeah. It's a lot more money and I think it's probably better spent on other gear until you can justify beefing up your arsenal.

                        Have fun in Europe.

Oh and I have the Sigma 10-20. I prefer it to the Tamron but that's just me.

Also if you can swing it a 24-70 f2.8 L. would be your best bet for vacation walk around glass. If you can't swing that, then get a nice used 28-135 f3.5-5.6 USM I/s for about 200 ish far better glass than any of the efs choices imo
24-70mm is all you need mind you do not get a mkii get a second hand mki cost me $900AUD and is an amazing lense.

I agree. Buy once, cry once. Go with the 17-40 f/4.0, or the 24-70 f/2.8.

I had the 17-40 and it's great. I little slow for indoors shooting though. Outside in the light it's excellent.

And 'practice' with it before your trip.
