What's the usual tip to give at restaurants in the US?

definitely not a Saskatchewan thing, I don't know anyone locally who will tip less than 15% on average. The normal amount to tip is between 15-20%. I will never tip below 15% unless there has been some major issues (I've been told to leave and pay my bill because I said my burger was still cold ). I think most people don't realize that tips (dependant on restaurant) don't just go to the server, they get split among the entire kitchen and service staff.

I break it down like this:

Great service: %25
good: %20
Mediocre%15
piss poor: One penny.

If I ever get a hint that I'm inconveniencing the staff (As in they'd rather not deal with having to serve me and work for a tip) I just leave 15%. Because I get it, some days are better than others. It might be a shitty day or month or year so I'm still going to tip, just nothing more. At 15% I don't even consider it a gratuity, I would just factor it in to the baseline cost.

If a server is rude I tip 5%. Which I've rarely done, but has happened when I've taken friends to upscale restaurants and we're the only people under 20 years old in the room, let alone 30.

But if your nice to servers they have no reason not to reciprocate it. I usually end up leaving the healthy side of 20% on the table. And if they are really nice 25-30.

$15 becomes $16.50 after tax; $20 total after tip and everything. If I was waited upon exceptionally well and/or I am feeling overly generous that day, I will tip more

I leave what feels right and more if they were awesome.

I've worked quite a few food service jobs so my opinion is skewed. I tip at least 5$ or 20% (double tax) whichever is higher, and the sky is the limit depending on service.

Delivery is usually the same. I'll often tip $6 to Jimmy Johns drivers for a $6.50 sandwich, as long as they're friendly.

I know that tips makes or break your day when you work food service. I try and tip well enough to turn a shit day to an alright day or keep a great day great.

Biggest tip was $25 on a $69 breakfast at Flappy Jack's in LA because the service defined excellent. I love that fucking restaurant.

This. My biggest pet peeve is if I have to ask for my drink to be refilled. I also hate seeing host or waiters eating while serving you at the same time. (Seems to be common at Chinese restaurants). It's happened numerous times watching them get up from their table, take our order then go back to eating. Sorry to be your fucking burden lol.

But still, the low of the low is 15% meaning I hated everything about you. The top has no limits, I've tipped as much if not more than my bill for those who earned it.
