You can't even legally buy an OEM E30 cat here anymore because it hasn't been CARB approved. You are basically stuck with Magnaflow & Catco 3-way replacements which are identical to the 49-state versions, except they have a number stamped into them and they cost $50 more.

Yeah it sucks, but $250 covers the cat and the install. Per the shop, Magnaflow is better than the Catco because it has more rare metal in the core so it will pass SMOG easier. I do it every 2 years because I run a little rich for (various) reasons that CA doesn't need to know about lol. Every time I am going to SMOG...straight to the exhaust shop, fresh cat, then straight to the SMOG station lol.

Yeah, you probably can't even buy the OEM one for it if you wanted to. Whoever sells it won't ship it to CA, same as trying to buy a non-CA cat online.

Not turbo, but 2.1L high compression hot cams. The WBO2 was having issues for a little while, which killed one cat. The optimal tune for this is a bit rich at WOT which also smokes cats pretty fast. Per the SMOG guy, older BMWs are notorious for running rich and burning up cats.

This thread is full of misinformation. You do not need an OEM cat, you simply need a CA legal cat. And how will they know if you are running a 49 state legal cat and not CA? There is an EO# on the cat and when they run that number it'll show as 49 state or CA.
