I DD a 2005 Subaru Legacy GT, with a 5 speed, basically a WRX on steroids, fun car, looking to sell it. Only averages about 18-19mpg (all city), can be found for about $9-12k for good ones. You want mine? I'll sell it, I want a e46 m3.

Seeing the OP is going to be a full-time college student PLUS working a job PLUS racking up miles each week, my sensible side says go for something basic and very reliable. Some have mentioned going with a Civic or Accord.....and I echo these suggestions. These cars are good on fuel economy and incredibly reliable. What maintenance you will have to do won't be much in terms of effort or cost. It is a sacrafice you make for the short term (i.e. while finishing school). Once that is done and you have time/money on your hands, go buy your fun car.

so here's an update if anyone cares. 35 mpg and gives way more smiles per gallon than any of my other cars.

You may want to consider a motorcycle, if you already have a car.

A brand new Ninja 250r is less than 5 grand. Talking about 60-75 mpg, depending on driving habits.

hell, even a new R6 is less than your max, and I can boast around 40-45 mpg even with my spirited riding style.

Definitely takes some getting used to though.

90-93 Honda Accord w/5-spd trans. don't bother with an autotragic...they're notorious for catastrophic failure.

With routine maintenance they'll live forever. Mine has 315k+ miles, all original, and runs like a champ even after neglegting it and flogging it daily thru high school. Cold start and go to redline? sure. Low a half quart and drive 600miles? no problem. All while getting a 32mpg average.

I second this. I bought a '92 EX Coupe in '93, and it was bulletproof. I drove it for nearly 8 years, and my wife drove it for 6 more. Besides change the oil the only maintenance I ever had to do was replace the master cylinder. I still regard it as one of the best cars I've ever owned.

+ Hyundai Veloster (non-turbo's get way better gas mileage than the turbos)
+ NEW(er) Ford Escort / Fiesta
+ NEW(er) Civic


OR

The better option for the wallet, a cheap no-frills, not new car that is reliable but may require some wrenching. Put the rest in your savings account.

Minor thread jack, but still relevant...

Opinions on 02-06 WRX's? I'm thinking about picking up another car and I really like the Saab 9-2x and the same gen WRX wagons.

I had an 05 9-2x Aero, great car. Exactly the same thing as a WRX except it has a better looking front end and Saab badges. Less attention from kiddie racers and cops. I went Stage 2 turbo upgrades and suspension, one car I regret selling but I had to pay off some bills at the time...

My experience with the MKIV TDI is about the same as the OPs. Great engine, nice interior, hard seats, ENDLESS electrical issues. After years of trying to track them down I ended up trading the damn thing in on a 2010 Scion xB for the wife, that has been a champ. It's slow and numb, but it's big on the inside and has only needed brakes, tires and oil changes in the last 3 years.

I have a 2010 model now w/ 100k+ and aside from glow plugs and routine maintenance I have had no issues. The other nice thing about the jetta is the comfort that if I hit a butterfly at 5mph I won't die.

Daily S50 Swapped E30 in the Summer,

Just bought a 240 Wagon for $500 To replace my Family's Beater Corolla. Runs and drives needs basic maintenance which Im doing this weekend. Just did the blower motor, which was terrible. Has 275k on it, Hopefully 5 Speed swapping it over the summer.





To the OP: Once those TDI's hit 150-180k they seem to need a shit-ton of maitenence, Turbos, headgaskets, And alot of little things that go wrong and then they dont run right.

well sorted eta. almost 400k on mine with no major problems. 1 trans at 300k the rest just normal wear. for 18k ? I would let levent find u an E and put the other 13k in my pocket. imho
