Some like Systema, some Krav Maga or Silat. I kind of fell into Daito Ryu/Wing Chun combo after having wrestled in college and experimenting with a lot of styles along the way. Many styles can be effective including even American boxing (in the right situation) but as was stated above a lot comes down to your mental toughness and experience. Having a good instructor cannot be overstated either. Some are good at marketing but not so good at imparting useful information. Just being in good physical condition could also save your life.
I was a prison guard for 6 years and learned a lot from that. Luckily I only HAD to use real self defense once in the street. There was some luck involved there too but it ended up ok.
On a side note I recommend The Little Black Book of Violence as a good primer.Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience. -Mark Twain
