I'm debating on an upgrade right now.

I hear AMD is coming out with their new Zen line of CPUs, but I've been with AMD for a while and haven't fiddled with anything Intel yet. I've had an AMD FX-6300 for a while, and since I've upgraded to a 970 after having a 650ti for a few years, I'd rather not bottleneck my GPU with an old processor.

Right now I'm thinking of getting an i5 6600K, but I would be open to a 6500. Just not sure if I should wait or just get the i5.

The only reason to get a K processor is to overclock. Also, if your main use of the PC is for gaming, you will get far more out of a GPU upgrade than a CPU upgrade. Compared to the GPU market, the CPU market is moving a glacial upgrade pace due to lack of competition from AMD. Intel doesn't need to iterate any faster because there is no economic pressure to do so.

I am using a 2500K and a GTX 1070. I'm sure I am getting some bottlenecking, and it would be more pronounced in CPU heavy games like RTS, but I don't play those. Any bottlenecking has been unnoticeable, to me at least.

TL:DR you don't need a K processor, or even the newest CPU architecture to enjoy an excellent gaming experience.

The price difference in performance is similar with an upgraded GPU vs CPU. I don't know why you are ranting about it.
Of course price does not correlate with performance, you could spend 3 times the number on parts and only net a 20% increase in performance.

Which is one of the main reasons I didn't get the 1000 series GPUs. I go with upgrades based on I play. I upgrade piece by piece based on what I need rather than just going for the most expensive thing so I can be futureproofed for a bit. The 970 fit my needs, but now it's bottlenecked by an older CPU. Guaranteed, I can run some things on Ultra without a stutter, but sometimes I like to use rendering and editing software and I multitask a LOT or I play games like TF2 that are CPU intensive.

Next check I get is going to another 8GB of RAM and a new processor. Maybe another HDD/SSD.
