Not really, it will last until the oil pump fails and starves the top end.

So my wife is pushing for a different vehicle I have narrowed it down to 6cyl x5
or a Acura MDX the MDX seems like a no brainer because its a Honda but supposedly honda/acura 5 speed auto's are shit it also is transvere mounted which makes it a pita to work on and it has a timing belt

I feel the M54 is pretty solid not sure about tranny & awd system but I feel like the X5 is a better choice in my situation.

I'm looking to spend 8-10k cash since I won't take out car loans anymore

Might I suggest looking into Mercedes ML-Gl320 SUV ?
My mom daily drives an 07' gl320 turbodiesel and it has had no problems whatsoever.
27mpg - 3 rows of seats - and you can't beat the turbo spool sound .

                Just my suggestion

I think the Mercedes is a bit more than he wants to spend. ;) My vote goes to the X5 with M54. They're great. Plus you can get them with a stick shift or throw one in it if the auto ever failed. Check it out good though. They can have some electrical glitches like some of the rear lights not working, the connectors for the front turn signals shorting out, and the adjusters in the xenon headlights commonly break causing them to only point downwards. So you may want to consider looking for one with halogens. The display in the instrument cluster and radio commonly fail also like other BMW's of the same era.
Plug and Play Wiring Harness Adapters for S54, S50, M54 and more.

my parents own a Cayenne which is almost exactly the same as far as maintenance. Heed my warning. When the battery died it was a enormous pain in the ass. The battery is situated under the drivers side seat. When it died the power functions did not work so we could not slide the seat back on the rails making it a huge pain in the ass to take off the bolts to tilt the seat back so we could remove the battery. WHO DOES THAT ? WHY ?!! Oh man that was a frustrating night.

A family member used to own a 2006 MDX - a very trouble free car for them. If you have plans to do even modest off-roading I would go look elsewhere. But if DD and family hauling duties are all you need, this should fit the bill just fine.

The X5 with straight-6 power would be nice too. Not as trouble free as an MDX, but less issues than the V8 X5s.

Later models with common rail is a solid engine. If you like tractor engines ofc.

Im gonna hold on to the suburban i have owned it for a long time and its been great vehicle i might put a lift on it and using it as a hunting camping rig

N52's are great motors the electric water pumps are problematic but there are several on e90 post with over 250k

I feel like buying a acura is the responsible thing to do but i know bmw's and have alot of faith in their inline 6's bmw V8's are shit. Bmw might nickle & dime me but if i buy a acura and the tranny shits the bed buying the reliable japanese car will seem pretty dumb
