    s10 blazers

for below your budget just find a late 90's to early 2000's outback, forester, or my favorite a baja and just pay to get the head gaskets, timing gear and cooling system freshened up! then when your done go sell it in Wyoming or something to all the yuppies who want em.

    something similar to this

my 3 liter N52 is great. freeway is like 35mpg, and it's like 270hp. But 6mt and a lighter car helps a lot. The automatic in the X5 just plain sucks.

the 330i will sit consistently between 30-50 mpg (econometer) on the freeway. the X5 is like.. 10-15 most of the time, and if you're going down hill it might breathe on 25. :p

but on the X5, the 3 liters don't really get much better mileage, and this one had the 3rd row, so.. I have to live with it. :(

I've had an '03 X5 3.0i since 2011, and it's been really good overall. I had my heart set on a 4.4i and a 2004 or newer E53 for the X drive transfer case, but found a deal on this one I couldn't pass up and it was in such great condition.

I did test drive them both and felt the 3.0 handled much better. Doesn't feel underpowered by any means and does great towing a snowmobile.

Must have either way, is the sport package, which mine has. You get the black shadowline trim, black headliner, 18" wheels (probably bigger yet on the 4.4i version??) and upgraded springs and struts. Nice to have would be the cold weather package for your trips to snow country.

Problem areas are the door handle carriers and window clips, regulators. I've also had my hood release cable rust out on me and had to replace the cable and the two front hood latches. The A/C drip line exits just above the splines where the front driveshaft enters the transfercase. I pulled mine at 140k to check and there was slight wear. Probably would have been fine for another 50k but I went ahead and replaced it. I replaced the A/C compressor cause it went bad around 140k.

The M54 engine though, I have to say is reliable and smooth. Just change the oil and it keeps going.

All this talk about gas mileage. If I don’t end up with a Subaru I think I’ll just get a Prius ffs. Lmao.

Hmm a budget X5 does not sound like a great idea to me. Personally I would never own a BMW/Audi/Mercedes SUV, there are more reliable, cheaper, and practical alternatives to be had.

I think you should look for a Toyota Highlander/4runner that has been well cared for. Your in Nevada so rust should not be an issue at all like the trucks where I am from. Might be a good idea to run an autocheck/carfax or something like that to see where cars are from if your not staying local. I have been looking at 100 Series Landcruisers and I have been surprised at how many make there was down the East Coast to states like Florida and Georgia after spending most of their lives in NY, PA, CT.

I would also shy away from Subaru's unless you are looking at earlier models. I thought they were fairly reliable, but I have come to find out from personal friends who have had problems with blown head gaskets, blown motors, non-functional AWD, and oil consumption.

Good Luck, if all fails... just get the Prius...

Damn this thread, now I found this.

I just got 15.1 on a 260 mile round trip on the freeway in my crewmax 5.7 Tundra.

                lol

I’d be totally content with getting like 25 mpg if possible. And I drive like a total grandma most the time so I wouldn’t be surprised if I could get more than 25 in a subaru.

CRV for the win, it fits the bill.

                        - A/C
                        - 5 doors
                        - 4wd
                        - reliable k24
                        - 25 mpg
                        - automatic

Find one cheap and spend the rest on a good sound system

That one is literally perfect for what I’m looking for.

I’m gonna have to have a talk with the Mrs.

For Hawaiian reasons Toyota’s hold there value like crazy out here.
A 250k mile 2001 tundra in good shape is still like a 6,000 truck out here haha!

Sucks because I’m more of a toyo believer than a Honda believer.
