I guess I'm one of the old guys around here.
I worked for an express delivery company for 15 years. Took a part time job with them about 6 months after graduating from college, and just stayed with them until about 3 years ago when they laid off all their hourly employees due to a merger with another company. They decided it was cheaper to keep the other company's hourly employees since most of them were independent contractors. It came as a complete surprise, but I have never looked back and wished I was still there.
So, in the past 3 years I have not had 1 full time job. I work for a Commercial Cleaning products company- servicing their customer's commercial floor scrubber machines and pretty much any other equipment or machinery they want me to work on. I also do some other work for them on an occasional basis. The company is supposed to open a new office about 15 minutes drive from my house sometime in 2007, and they say they want me to come to work for them full time as a regular employee- but I'm not making that jump unless they make me a really good offer.
I also work on a part-time basis for a local shop that specializes in Vintage race cars as well as Italian car and BMW maintenance and service. I have worked about 5 "weekends" for them this year travelling to Vintage races and providing race support for their customer's race cars. This usually involves driving to the track on Weds (or Tues/Weds if it's really far away), getting the hauler set up and cars unloaded and ready to run by weds afternoon. Then we keep the cars running Thurs, Fri, Sat and Sun and load up Sun afternoon and drive back home. We usually have to get to the track around 7am each day and we stay until at least 6-7pm, then we go somewhere to eat dinner and hang out for a while, then back to the hotel- maybe a little TV or web surfing, and in bed early- usually by 10pm. Long days, the pay is just OK, especially when you figure out the hourly rate..., but it's alot of fun and I never get tired of seeing some of the incredible cars that show up at vintage races. I also help out in the shop a couple of days a week, doing everything from restoring a '67 Alfa Duetto to R&R'ing the cyl head and oil pan on an E36 M3, then helping the boss reinstall the transmission in a vintage Ferrari 330GT (~'65?).
I also part out cars on the side. Mostly E30's and E34's, since that's what I drive on a daily basis, and my track car is an E30 325is- but I've branched out to E36's recently. I also have several 2002's, including a couple of tii's. The used BMW parts business will not exactly make you rich, but I usually buy cars to be parted out that have some part or parts that I need/want for my own car, or a "project" car that I am working on, and then part out and sell the rest. I mostly just use the parts cars to finance my own car mods and repairs.
We live on my wife's family farm, so we are also technically farmers. We raise beef cattle, though right now we have less than 20 cows, we had more than 100 a couple of years ago. It is alot of work, and we are usually happy if the income from the cows covers the property taxes and expenses (fuel, fertilizer, etc) on the farm every year.
Anyway, I can't say that I'm an expert in much of anything, but I can tell you this- do something that you enjoy doing and your life will be much happier. I don't understand how people are always chasing the $$$, trying to find the job where they can make a shitload of money, then working 100 hours a week, never spending any time with their family and suffering health problems due to stress and all the BS that goes with high-stress jobs. Don't get me wrong, I like money as much as the next guy, but we (me, my wife and son) live very happy lives with what most people would consider borderline poverty level of income.
