If you can't shoot before you buy, forget it. The day you shoot one you will be glad you passed. For a little less look at the affordable Springfield Armory line. If you got a grand, Kimber has some sweet .45's that are getting harder to find. Impact in Utah has a few still. Just pay a FFL fee and you'll still save $$$.

Whoaaaaa. Back up a sec. YOU may hate them, I can't argue that, but I can absolutely argue the recoil part, it's just not true. I have owned two Glock model 21s and LOVED them both. The recoil on the 21 is no worse than any other handgun I've shot, and less than many. The Glocks are designed so that the barrel axis is very low on the gun and as a result it is closer to being in line with the wrist/arm so that recoil is much reduced and accuracy is much increased. As for the second shot being less than accurate, I can tell you that is absolutely not true either. I have shot very competitively with my Glock against guys with 1911s (as well as other model guns) on the shooting range and "double tapping" as it's called, is normal procedure. If you train with your weapon as you should, you can shoot just as accurately with the Glock as you can with most.

It's personal preference man, if you like the 1911 frame, buy a 1911 style gun. There are many great ones out there and your choices are virtually unlimited in price and quality. I can only say that I've shot both and for me, the Glock is my first choice for personal defense for simplicity in design, accuracy, and reliability.

But this is going to be an argument much like those debated by Gibson Les Paul fans and Fender Stratocaster fans as to which guitar is better so I will let it go at that.

Wow, that's a bit of overkill doncha think? I've seen some of those tests done but more controlled and better documented and with the same results, the Glock performed! Exactly why I choose the Glock for carry for PD.

On another note, I'm about to purchase from a good friend of mine, a Colt Delta Elite SS 10MM. I haven't shot it yet, but from all I've read the 10MM round is an excellent defense round ballistically speaking. It will also be the first 1911 framed gun I've ever owned and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't just a bit excited about it. :D

Personal Defense. I do have a Firearms permit aka CCW(concealed carry weapons) permit.

You paid $150 for a Smart Parts Teardrop?? Whoever sold you that barrel raped you big time. Anyways, I would shoot for the prices Linus mentioned.

"Colt Delta Elite SS 10MM" is a wonderful gun. I do not like anything in SS unless its just for playing and showing but none the less the 10mm is a wonderful round. Still on the pricey side as far as ammo goes.

again Im not saying Glock is the way to go, but to have as your back up gun and your first gun, I would choose something that you know is never going to fail over something that is used more for playing and punching paper.

                    Good luck!

Dont settle for a Glock. If you've shot superior guns you will have buyers remorse.

Go to pawnshops and used gun stores. You can find a used H&K USP or a nice SIG for $400-500 You'll be much happier in the end.

Again dont buy a gun because of a name or because they look cool. Get something that works. Guns are tools used to kill, just like hammers for carpenters. Get something that you know works for you and that you have faith that it will always work.

What is it with people and their anti-Glockness? What is it that makes a H&K or Sig superior? Nothing in my experience so maybe you could enlighten me?

I personally shot a Sig P-220 as well as a H&K USP .40 both BEFORE I chose (not settled) to go with the Glock 21. It shot better and I was more accurate from the holster with it, naturally. The H&K actually had worse recoil than the G21 and the P-220 just didn't feel as good as the Glock overall. Not to mention the breakdown procedure for the Glock is far simpler than either of the other guns as an added bonus and if you are going to properly maintain your weapon, you should clean it after every shooting session and for me that meant an awful lot of breaking down a weapon for cleaning.

Take Vedubs advice, try on a few and find what works for you regardless of what others are telling you to do. Do your own research and testing, and you'll make the right decision.

RC, I guess it goes to show that the boys from the south know a little bit about guns. Go figure.

I really liked the glock I shot. Fit good in my hand and I felt like I had a lot of control and it felt good to shot it. I also shot the HK and liked it maybe alittle bit better. Up in the North parts we dem boys that use shotguns. haha thanks for the debate and facts.

We down south also do shotguns! I just grabbed my camera and took a pic of my 3 gun set up. I do 3 gun matches every 2 weeks! Its that old saying "the South will rise again!" :)

Also in these 3 guns I have more tied up in them than most of the cars here!

edited for better pic with flash!
