Here is a 187 Mini-14 I've been working on for the last few months.

It was a hand me down from my dad back when I was young, and I wasn't interested in it till recently. I always thought mini's were piss-ass ugly. However, I saw some tastefully modded ones, some replicating m14/m1a style, and so I began the journey. I'd say I'm about 75% there.

Made the barrel strut out of carbon steel on a lathe, and the cheek plate (1/2 finished) out of kydex. GG&G scope rail, Barska euro-30 3-12x IR scope, Vector mini red dot & 45 degree rail, and a federal ordinance hand guard. Gundoc worked the trigger (4-5lb pull), c&t barrel to legal min oal, added a recoil buffer and some smaller gas port bushings.

    The To Do list:
Test and Compare new build to stock setup 7"@100 w/ 55gr. Gonna try 62gr, I hear the 1-in-10 barrels liked it more.
    Bed and Refinish/paint factory stock
    Get a 20rd (10cap) straight mag.
Change the optics to something that weighs less.

Shit's way heavy how it sits. I know they are inherently heavy rifles but I think 9.7 lbs (dry, 10rd) is a bit too heavy.

I've got preban 30s, but they don't have that m14/m1a look I'm going after, and the actual 10rd mags look wimpy as hell.

Indeed we do. One of the guys on my course told me that for his first tour he was issued an unused one, still with a heavy coat of storage oil of some sort.

Some units have started being issued sig p226's

I made it from a 12"x12" sheet of kydex. The kydex came from mcmaster. I used about 6x12".

I liked the karsten cheek rests (where I got the idea), but I also thought it would be easy enough to try my hand at making it. I have the tools, I just haven't really worked with plastics. This is the first attempt.

Karsten sells them for a good price. I could have just bought that one, but there's no challenge in buying it. Here's the link anyhow

And that is a 308 MWS; it would run circles around this mini. The way it sits it's 9.7 lbs and it's chambered in 556. Not a very good combination, but if I get rid of the scope and run the red dot only, I could probably cut 1.5lbs off the gun.

10LBS isnt that bad. i think that kinda the cut-off weight for anything "tactical". my AR has got to be getting close to that weight it all the tacticool stuff i have bolted on. Now my bolt-gun on the other hand....has to weigh in somewhere around 17lbs...pretty much only good for prone shooting, or shooting off the bipod from a ledge.

Sup r3v. I'm going to be doing an AR build pretty soon and I was looking for some opinions on whether to make an AR-15 or an AR-10.

I understand the higher caliber round from the .308 with the AR-10 will cause more recoil but will be more accurate at longer ranges. I believe you can decrease the recoil on the gun though with a muzzle break, correct me if I'm wrong on that one.

The AR-15 on the other hand has less recoil, could hold more rounds (if California wasn't fascist about gun control), and would be good primarily just for close quarters and somewhat mid-range. Although for either option, P-Mags would be the way to go for holding ammo.

Anyways just wondering if any of you guys have made any of those builds and looking for feedback on which is best.

What do u want to do with the rifle? Target shoot? Hunting? Self defense? The AR10 is going to be more costly to build, and the ammo is pretty expensive as well, also it's going to weight a bit more than an AR15. Personally I like both, but went for the AR15 build first. Second build is going to be AR10 for medium game hunting.

I would build the AR15 first, learn what parts you like/dislike on the less expensive gun.

I would build the DPMS and not the AR10 if it were me. Thats if you wanted a7.62x51. Being that ammo is so freaking expensive its a deturant. Trigger time is what they are for. I rarely shoot any of my 308s just due to the ammo cost alone.

5.56 is not that cheap to shoot either, but parts are starting to get back out on the market. I am currently building this 10.5 for my SBR. Currently sits on a pistol build till the paperwork comes back.

Its a Rainer Arms Select Barrel with the Vltor casv-m. Aero A3 flattop upper. Still need a bolt and carrier group.

I usually just go to the range to shoot and both the .223 and the .308 are pretty expensive right now since the feds bought most of it up.

So the AR-10 is more expensive to build?
