Thanks, I'm hoping to get some grouse killin' in this weekend. The freezer needs stocking.

I would look into either Springfield or Para Ordnance. Both have lower end models that start within your budget and are great starting points for what will inevitably become a 1911 addiction.
Also, don't hesitate to look at the used guns on the rack, there are lots of bargans to be had.

I had a friend up here go huntin'. Last two nights we skinned and butchered a nice buck. Steaks in the fridge, backstrap for dinner tonight. Next season I shall bag my own.

I have a Taurus PT1911, I love it, in my opinion and a lot of gun testers opinions it's the best bang for the buck. To build a custom shop 1911 with all of the standard features on my Taurus you'd be looking at around $2100.00, and you should be able to pick one up for 6ish.

are you looking to CCW this pistol??? Or just have fun and keep it on the night stand. We need an answer to this before giving accurate advise.

This will apply to any pistol purchase, go to the store and handle as many as you can and narrow your choice down more to how well they fit your hand and how well you find the controls laid out and how easy it for you to operate them. Then shoot as many of the ones you like the best in as many calibers as you can and see which you like the best form fit, ease of operation and how each performs with a give caliber.

1911 is a great platform to start on and learn from, (its what I cut my teeth on, well for center fire pistols) I was just wandering around in a gander mountian in PA tonight and saw new kimber ultra carry's for 850 so you can get into a bit more gun for a touch more money.

That said I am a big fan of Sig Sauer (look at my posts) they are way more than you want to spend as New, but used can be found in your price range (my current carry gun sig p220 w/5 mags hogue grips and 200 rounds out the door for 675 this last winter)

New in your current price range for 1911 I would get the Springfield or in non 1911 a XD or a glock (shit did I just say that).

My sig is my carry gun for right now and I love it. I got mine used from one of my friends for 700 or 650 with a hogue grip, 4 magazines, and a sherpa holster. I just got the .22 lr kit for it also and its great! The best part is now its really cheap to shoot and I get practice with my carry gun.

The Taurus is a fine gun, and I sold lots of them when I was in the business, but it is certainly not a 1911 from the standpoint of customizabilty. All of the functional internal parts on the PT1911 are proprietary, meaning that if you want to modify or replace something it has to come from Taurus.
If you plan on doing nothing but going to the range with the gun, they are great. But if you are looking to tinker, which I think is one of the draws of the 1911 platform, look elsewhere.

Don't really need to tinker with the Taurus, seems like it's all there. Just curious though, what parts are there on a PT 1911 that are not interchangeable with the standard 1911 parts (yeah, I know about "drop in" bs)? Are you saying a match barrel and bushing or match hammer and sear could not be installed? Seems like the exploded diagram on the Taurus site makes the PT 1911 a clone of a series 80 Colt except for the funky hammer lock.

No experience with the Taurus (I like the 1911 I'm wearing), but it looks like a good value for a starter 1911, and I don't see why you *can't* tinker with it. Whether you *should* is a different thing.

im just looking for a nice pistol to take to the range a few weekends every month, and something to keep around the house for
i have shot glocks, beretas, and and 1911 models. of those 3 i liked the 1911s the best. all the 9mm felt like kids guns. i like pistols with a bit of weight to them and a bit of bang behind them. i also got the closest grouping with the 1911.
