On the 80% thing and getting tooling. You can get decent hobbyist small bench top mill from Grizzly or H/F that will hold the tollerance's needed to machine a 80% for about 800 bucks new. No its not that great of a tool form a production stand point but there are a few places you can buy kits to turn to these elcheapo mills into CnC's that will hold decent tolerances up and up to 4 axis's. You get the G code file for what ever you want to make and you turn a block of metal into what ever you want.......

so what kind of experience do you guys have with gun forums? because hoooolly shit, the one i went to for some questions about the legality of the 80% frame (MD specific forum) has, so far, been filled with dicks that make us look like mr. rodgers when it comes to new people.
like, i literally got shat on for posting this:

So... let me get this straight... you can order this frame/jig combo online, finish the frame yourself, buy the barrel/ancillary bits to make it a complete gun and this is legal in MD? The same place where you can't get a regular AR anymore? Mind. Blown. (in a good way)
So how exactly does this work though? The basic reading that I've done says you don't have to get a serial number for or register these things, but can you actually use them? Like, say I was going to the range & got pulled over, what happens then? I've never actually had an officer ask to search my car, but how exactly would that go down if the officer found an unmarked, un-serialized gun in my car?
I think this is cool, because DIY gun, but the legal prospects are kinda worrying

i'd love to move down south (something like florida) but the jobs (payment wise) in MD are too hard to resist... i'd take a fairly large pay cut if i moved. that and i hate change with a burning passion.
on the plus side... my jig/frames are supposed to be coming in tomorrow ;D
i'll be sure to take some pics, but i don't think i'm gonna test the jig out until i get a slide & barrel. after watching a few youtube videos of fitting the slide/barrel i've gained a real appreciation of how critical it is to get that shit perfect. watched one dude fuck his frame up and sounded like he was gonna cry when his slide went "clack clack clack" when he shook the assembled product

whelp, finally got my package in ;D
i am slightly disappointed though... the "compact" frame i ordered isn't an officers' frame like i thought it was, it's more like a "midsize" frame. total length is about 1/4" shorter than the full size frame i got with the jig, the rails for the slide are about 1/8" shorter than the rails on the full size frame. distance between the grip holes are both roughly 3 1/16".
if my internet research is right, what they're actually making are "commander" frames and selling them as "compact" frames.
i guess it's not the biggest deal in the world though... looks like i can still rock a 3.5" barrel on the commander-style frame and be OK.
also, the frames are quite light - the full size came in at 4.2 oz
i'll be taking some pics and posting them up at the end of the work day, think i might have to make my own thread for this, gonna be way too picture heavy for this one
