Yep - pretty insane stuff - carriers are lining up from all over the world for this new aircraft. The order book is so full now that if you called up Boeing and ordered your own, you wouldn't be able to take delivery for eight years (2015). If all their testing goes smoothly, I'd say Boeing hit a grand slam with this plane. Seriously cool stuff.

And as for the 'shortage' in carbon fiber composites, I see Boeings' use of this material as a benefit for the masses in the long term. Because of the large quantity that's going to be needed, various techniques and technologies are likely to be developed which will make manufacturing and applying this material more cost effective down the road.

Having worked on the Dreamliner program and currently working for the company that makes all their CAD/CAM/PLM software, I can tell you that it's some serious shit to develop an airplane in the short time they did.

It was nearly fully digitally tested before the FAA will even see it.

aerospace technology is what brings ways to introduce new technology in other fields of business. Look at the high end mtn and road bike industry. They would not be doing the crazy business they are without the aerospace titaniums and carbon fibers they are using today. Hell a friend of mine who runs the engineering department at one of the worlds premier highend bike manufactures is even making parts for NASA for the new mars rover that is going to mars around 2015

How do production delays translate into the A380 being a "hunk of shit"? Planes fly once they are a finished product. Once they begin to fly they are judged according to many a factors. I think it would be fair to allow the finished product to begin its career before we judge it. Yes, cost of production and such is a huge factor but that's for Airbus to worry about and still doesn't make the plane inferior. It would simply make those carrying out her production and design inferior.

The 787 will actually be competing with Airbus' A350 (currently under dev). However, judging by the production and delivery problems they have had and the fact that for a while they errouneously considered the 787 a non-threat to it's A330, I think Boeing will be ahead for quite some time. The 777 is by far my favorite plane to fly one. At least with American. TV Monitors on the back of every seat in coach = more convenient long-haul flights.

The damn plane doesn't even have a yoke. The plane itself is not needed. Boeing had already ruled out a full double decker airplane a long time ago. They were smart enough to forsee a a change from large capacity, long haul flights to small capacity, direct flights.

I understand that the A380 and 787 are completely different airplanes and are not direct competitors. Boeing and Airbus are competitors however and they both have very different visions for the future of commercial aviation.

They had just taken over ValuJet (known for their nose first into the Everglades just under a year earlier - no disrespect to those who suffered) It was a DC-9. Having that on my mind, I recall reading about their fleet on their site. It stated they had just purchased brand new 717's within the last few months which kind of put me at ease. Sure enough, as soon as I boarded, for the first and only time in my life, I experienced "that new plane smell". That plane was absolutely brand new.

I'd say that this plane is about the size of a school bus- Maybe a bit smaller. It has a row of single seats on the left and a row of double seats on the right. I complained to the stewardess about the size of the plane and she told me that she works on commercial planes smaller than that one.

I'm very proud of Embraer as they are Brasilian and their planes are great products. They have been doing really well since getting into the 70 to 130 passenger market, becoming a potential rival even to Boeing and Airbus. Orders have been pouring in from all over the world. American has long since had Embraer in their fleet. It's funny you bring up the small size of the plane as the market shows everyone wants bigger regional jets. And with Boeing and Airbus launching replacements for their B737 and A320 by the end of the decade, you can bet Embraer is scrambling. It will be interesting..

Oh really? If there is no need why is Boeing being asked by many ex-Airbus customers to make them full double decker 747s???? And Boeing is going to carry through with it.

There's many uses for it. Cargo and transport. The only problem is that the uses are specific to certain regions.

But the A380 is garbage I'm sorry. They were not able to deliver for many flaws... they keep post-poning the delivery by 6 months many times, which proves that they need to keep fixing many things before the plane will ever be ready.
