I remember seeing similar frame designs a few years ago, although the company's name escapes me at the moment. In any case, their lack of attention to detail in the photos is a bit disturbing. Leaving the saddles with that much tilt, not putting it into the big ring, etc. present a lackluster image of the bike. Additionally, with a claimed frame weight of 2.7 lbs for the mountain bike frame, thats nearly .5 pound heavier than an S-works, and without definitive performance benefits.

I'm sorry. I should scan the pics of the Santa Cruz frames that I ripped the bottom bracket shells out of. The first one put me in the hospital, 14 stitches in my knee. The second one lasted a whole 6 months before I ripped the bottom bracket shell out leaving a stop light across from the bike shop I used to work at. I didn't go down. The third again only lasted about 6 months and failed leaving a different stoplight on my way to school.

Santa Cruz is a made in China mass marketed pile of crap. All of them from the top of the line to the bottom. I wouldn't ride one for love nor money.

my dad has a nomad, i think he got it new in like 2008 or so.
definitely a blast to ride in the tahoe/markleeville area :)

No offense, but to most people with limited riding experience any 160mm+ travel bike will feel fun.

No, it took me one time, but the others were warranty frames. Once, Ok, it happens. I know I break a lot of parts. The second time I was done with Santa Cruz, but I couldn't afford to have a custom frame built at the time. I started saving what I could for a custom one. Eventually I had Carl Strong build me a frame out of Columbus Altec 2+ and Easton Ultralight. That frame lasted 7 years before it failed at both the rear replaceable dropout and the front of the head tube. It died of fatigue, the bottom bracket area was unaffected however.

It was pretty sad when my 2.75lb Scandium Action Tec hard tail outlasted my 3.25lb road frames. Now, 12 years later, the Action tec is still in one piece.

Sorry, Santa Cruz sells made in China mass marketed crap that has very little quality control. You can just as easily get a POS as a good frame.

What gear ratio would you guys recommend?

The area around me is rather flat, so hills aren't an issue. I have been reading up on it and it seems like 4x/16 or 4x/17 are the more popular combinations. So, do you guys have a recommendation?

I ran a 42/17 on my fixie, we have a little bit of hills here and i had no problem. If its more flat.. a 42/16 might be alright.. easy to start and climb small hills.

I run 42/16 on mine but I used to run 42/15 which I found ideal. It was very similar to the ratio on my BMX which I think is perfect.

well, i work at a shop, so im not really paying full price on stuff.
