    "Broadband" question

I've got what my cable company calls "High Speed Internet", but it isn't anything like high speed. In fact, the bandwidth is so little that I can't go to youtube and stream a video. I just ping'd www.google.com and got a low of 40ms for one packet, and as high as 598ms. So WTF? How fast is your internet?

There is no option to upgrade to faster speed either, and this is really pissing me off. And yeah, my Firefox is updated, and I get the same results on both my powerbook and my pc.

Who is the provider? My Comcast on the West Side works great. It might be the rural area you are in, but I would think being close to a college it would be faster.

Charter Cable is the only company available over here. And yeah, when I lived in Seattle my charter cable was very fast, and at my mother's house in Bellevue, I was downloading torrents at like 350 kb/s. I guess it must be a product of the low population here. This cable company doesn't offer On Demand, and they just started offering HD about a month ago.

Use Speedtest on all your devices with our free desktop and mobile apps.

Go there choose San Francisco, see what speed you get.

Oh that reminds me Josh. The neighborhood I'm moving into is a test bed for AT&T's new fiberoptic rollout. My small development will have a 25gig FO node.

Very nice! There's a few developments here that have fiber optic nodes, too.

Maybe it's an issue with the trunk cable that runs to your house, or even the cable in your house. Possibly a bad connection either at the main node, or your local transceiver box. Call the cable company and see what's going on, open a trouble ticket on it if you have to.

I pay for 12 mb and average 8, The best I have seen is 21. I don't know why but I get better throughput from SF than Phoenix.
