A platoon would never send one man walking into the middle of a town, alone, in plain view. Also, after the guy was shot by the sniper, nobody would go do the same fucking thing again. What the fuck was Kubrick thinking? Then, when Joker was explaining to his superior what the quote on his helmet meant he said "the duality of man". Well way to steal the main fucking theme of Platoon there Kubrick.
As far as the whole sniper scene goes, you weren't there, you weren't in the Marines, you weren't in Vietnam. You don't know what kind of stress those guys would have been under, if they'd been thinking clearly, if they had a rational plan for going about trying to move through the city, etc. I'm not saying that I would, but come on man, stop trying to act like you know exactly what you would have done in the heat of the moment. It's just a movie. It's not a documentary.

And furthermore, there's no reason to start getting all pissed and calling us crazy because we think FMJ is better. I can't stand it when people start resorting to cutting down scenes, lines and directors when they can't convince people that the movie they like is better than another. I spent 4 years of my life working in a video store, listening to people try to spin that shit on me day in and day out, because I didn't think "Requiem for a Dream" or whatever movie they were renting wasn't the greatest movie ever made. Don't start threads like this if all you're going to do for several pages is argue with people because they like a movie more than one you like.

        Ricccccoooo!

My AP US History teacher who was in Nam showed us a lot of WWII and Vietnam movies. He specifically left out Platoon for some reason though.

i rented out apocolypse now redux today, and in my honest opionion i really didnt like it! it just made me think WTF is this shit!? it was tottally random, but if these things were true, than the vietnam war was more fucked up then i thought it was. some parts were good, like the start, but after they stole that guys surf board i just tuned out. on another note, i rented out saving prv ryan and watched that again, it gets better each time i see it!

You should see the attack of the sea shore village with Wagner's Walkyrie and surf boards as a metaphore that expresses the silliness of this war. Another wrong war for all the wrong reasons. "Apocalypse now" is perhaps the most extraverted of the Vietnam movies.

One great war movie that has been forgotten is "The quiet american" with Michael Caine, that depicts the exit of the french occupation and the coming of the americans, with, as a background, the love story between a british journalist and a vietnamese beauty, with the american lover in the background.

Brake harder. Go faster. No shit.

while not a movie, for those of you that have HBO, the series John Adams is awesome! It started two Sundays ago. New episodes every Sunday, repeating throughout the week.

Did any of you know that John Adams actually defended (successfully) the British troops involved in the Boston Massacre? I had no idea!

haven't seen the movie, but I read the book by Graham Greene. Phenomenal book- he's my favorite author. Also, Apocalypse Now is a recasting of another 19th century book "Heart of Darkenss" by Joseph Conrad, similar to how Oh Brother Where Art Thou was a recasting of Homer's The Odyssey. So, though it is a war movie (and a very anti-war movie at that), the themes run much deeper than just the absurdity of the Vietnam War specifically.

                          The Killing Fields.

Awesome movie- maybe not a "war" movie in the strict sense of the word, but still great.
