What, exactly, would this accomplish?

There are many skills to be learned in the service of one's country. And the free college at the end would help build a stronger, better educated workforce.

I can tell you a certain by-product would be people ending up enlisting that DGRA (dont give a rat's ass). Sounds like a lot of wasted paperwork and sergeant wages to me...

As if lots of 17 year olds don't work for less? And as of 2006, a sergeant in the Army starts at about $19,000.

Lets focus on the people that WANT to enlist. There are plenty of people who HAVE WEIGHED the costs and benefits and made their decision accordingly.
I am all for boosting the benefits in a time of war.

The costs and benefits will not be an issue when the same is required of everyone.

It is not like we are lacking troops.

Army Trying to Keep Troops From Leaving

WASHINGTON - About 7,000 U.S. soldiers in Iraq, Kuwait and Afghanistan who were planning to retire or otherwise leave the service in the next few months are getting new marching orders: Stay put.

The Army is expanding what it calls a ``stop loss'' order to keep soldiers in uniform -- even those who have met their contractual service obligation or are scheduled to retire -- during a rotation of tens of thousands of troops that begins this month and is scheduled to finish in May.

Col. Elton Manske, chief of the Army's enlisted division, said Monday that the move was deemed necessary to maintain the cohesion and combat effectiveness of units now operating in Iraq and Afghanistan.

He did not explain why the Army cannot manage the readiness of its forces in Iraq and Afghanistan without forcing soldiers to stay in the service beyond their scheduled retirement or enlistment period. Critics say it is because the Army has too few soldiers and too many overseas commitments.

A mandatory military is actually a good idea and it works well. The problem is it's a socialistic ideal.

In fact I was pissed when I got my passport and I'd been automatically signed up for (not so)selective service, when I specifically did not sign up at 18.

So, I showed up at the post office in full dress blues since I was already in the Navy...

It's a small price to pay for living here, I notice you weren't pissed enough to denounce your citizenship and move somewhere else though.

I remember when I got my selective service notice, it gave me an idea and I went in the Air Force reserves, helped pay for school and I was able to go to some cool places during my 2 week commitment each year ( PI, Okinawa, Guam, HI ).

I suppose I could have just bitched about it on the net but it wasn't around then.

There are good reasons to have it and bad reasons. But the main thing is, it just will not work with the system we have in place.

^^^ I agree it would be mostly a good thing, but it'll never happen here. I agree with Robert Heinlein's idea that one can live here and have the benefits of citizenship without service, but cannot vote or run for office unless you've done some form of service to the government. I would, however, include non-military service. Even things like teaching, government jobs, police (but they would have to be screened/watched carefully to avoid corruption), etc.

But again, wishful thinking as it will never get anywhere... too much of a threat to too many people.
