I'm curious what you'd like to see Mariano? I'm serious when I ask you this question - I have respect for you and your opinion so I'd like to know.

Id like to see something that actually will never happen and what I have understood to be an idealist point of view. Its just so disappointing and rigged with interests and favors. Both parties. Id also like to see that it is so easy to taint the election of the president that flies in the face of everything this country supposedly stands for like the 2000 election.

              huh what? rap music promotes:

1: distancing within the black community, and distancing from the white community. The RECOGNITION of DIFFERENCE prods to keep segregation around.

2: girls as sluts hoes whores

3: drug use as a way of life

4: the incorrect assumption that possessions equal happiness (aka "bling")

              ---------------------------------------------------------------------

It is not your race or color of skin that advances or stifles you in life.
              It is:

              1: DECISIONS THAT YOU MAKE

              2: How hard you work

Being black does not make it harder to "make it" in life. In fact it makes it easier. It is much easier to be awarded acceptance at a good school as ANY race OTHER THAN white.
Same equation goes for employers that have to have a certain percentage of black etc employees. WTF? Why not let the hardest working, most qualified worker have the job?

              ----------------------------------------------------------------------

As for Obama's speech, it was well written and delivered, though very misleading. but, what did you really expect from a politician?

How about a little personal responsibility, and a little less blame.

And Obama has a big thing for everyone to have healthcare. I agree. I don't think that there should be anyone *without* healthcare (unless they opt out). It is currently a fucked up system, but with the likes of FEMA managing healthcare, it will CERTAINLY go to shit. A couple thousand government employees will benefit NICELY from their new positions, no one will have top-notch healthcare, and the system will be fucked (and we will all be paying for it).

              The way to fix healthcare:
Give the tax deduction to the consumer, not the businesses.
edit: and limit the liability for MD

                uofm, sweet points earlier.

imo, obama needs to stfu and quit stabbing the democrats in the back. i know its really harsh to put it like that, but i'm getting tired of all the rhetoric generated by his intentions of becoming president through a fight with a fellow could-be candidate over the same views on topics.
i'm still trying to figure out why people dislike sen. clinton so much. i single out these ideas to which really came from a time of bill's presidency and none of it means anything to me in negative terms. to consider that she has the experience to run this country and make the right changes is enough.
hillary offered to obama the chance as a running mate to which he turned down. and pretty harshly too. how fucking stupid can you be? he has no where near the ability to do what needs to be done to pull us out of recession and rebuild a world community. lately ive been seeing w. bush in his speeches and options. its starting to get really scarry to think that obama could actually be an extension of what is currently driving this country into the ground.
accepting hillary's offer as vp would be his absolute best move. the race in november would be null and void at that point. a land slide for the democrats. hillary would be the activist in motion to change and get things done while obama does what he does best and rally this country and relations. it could be a good team.

on other ideas, we need to do away with the electoral college. thats first and most important. i shouldnt even have to explain this part. second, we need another party in equal running. not only as presidential candidates, but in the senate. party control would be minimal and everything would have checks and balances. this would especially mean representation of the people.

It won't happen. While yes, the electoral college is old and out of date, it is one more variable for politicians to use to their advantage. The Republicans used it once, the Democrats would have used it the same way. Also, to get rid of it means amending the constitution, and there's not enough urgency to risk the shitstorm that would follow. As for another party, it won't happen either. The two mainstream parties have too much control over the media and Politics in general. Any third party would be drowned out by both parties, and even if a few were able to get elected to the House/Senate they would be incapacitated by the other two remaining parties. The check/balance system between elected officials and their constituents has been largely diminished with the advent of political modeling, gerrymandering, etc.

FWIW, the one thing I find more frustrating than anything else is the polarization of politics. Typically the left- and right- wing extremists are much, much more politically active than the more moderate members of the party. So, primary elections are held that typically vote for a more extreme candidate, while those of us in the middle are then left with candidates that are more to either side than we would like, or is good for the country. This is why I will vote McCain: He is MODERATE, at least much more so than the other two. He happened to be popular enough to win the Conservatives' nomination. I agree with most his policies (Government healthcare support when YOU buy health insurance, for example. I'm not positive of the exact workings, but the govt. would subsidize you once you bought healthcare for yourself) and he has the experience to get things moved around in Washington. More importantly, he doesn't pander or use the "victim mentality" to buy votes the way Obama and Hilary do; both of them to promise change without much backing it up.

/rant, sorry to change the subject but it's late and I'm tired and pissed off about this.

I had as much control over being white as they did being black - people who still talk about slavery are perpetuating the divide between black and white. we have to acknowlege that happened, but we need to get beyond it.

If you want to say "Fuck whitey" or whatever, talk about the civil rights movement and the shit that happened in the 40's or 50's - not slavery.
I didn't enslave anybody, nor did anyone in my family. But, that doesn't make it irrelevant today. Nobody should be saying "Fuck whitey," but the past is the past and people should accept it. Because of the past, the average black person in America doesn't have the same chances most whites do. We should be working to even things out. It isn't a race issue now, it is an economic issue now. Playing the "my family never enslaved anyone" card is a cop out. It is our generation's turn to try and end the economic gap created by racism and slavery in the past.

Wow, you mean this many generations past the end of slavery "My ancestors were held down and enslaved" isn't a cop out?
I'm going to have to say that that is a load of horse dung.

Let's see. 170+ years ago, the founder of my church was martyred. Before that he was imprisoned, tarred and feathered, chased across the country, etc.
Then there's the Jewish race. I think I read somewhere that if you talk about ANY subject long enough, the Holocaust will come up. Which is usually true, I feel. My point is that their race was ALMOST EXTERMINATED, like an infestation of ants. That was only, what 60-70 years ago?
I think both of these groups have mostly moved on. (I know my religion has)

My point is: When is it going to stop being a crutch? When is it time to say, "Yes, that was a long time ago, this is NOW."?

There are plenty of opportunities for members of every race and creed to succeed. You see it EVERY DAY. You decide your fate. I think it's pretty damn selfish and immature to say that you're limited to what you can do because of your skin color.
I must have a warped sense of reality. That's what it is. Because it seems to me that anymore, the "white man" is the minority. In my case, when I was growing up, that was true.
However, I chose to become something, and it really wasn't that damn hard. Now I'm trying to make the next step in my career, and like it or not, I kinda wish I wasn't so "white". As much as no one wants to talk about it, there are quotas for officer promotions (part of the politics of the rank, I guess) for minorities. There are PROGRAMS for people who "didn't have an opportunity to partake in some of the nicer things because of where they were raised." Maybe I could have used that, but I chose not to. And I don't use it as an excuse.

I take responsibility for MY actions.
Not those of my father, or his father, or anyone of my ancestors. They have to atone for their actions. They had to look at themselves in the mirror everyday. They have their reward.
Maybe some other people should do the same.

I think if anyone is holding anyone down - it is themselves. I see it every day. Not just whites, blacks, ect - everyone. Some people just have a lower class attitude - they blame everything and compare themselves to everyone. Like LDSbeaker said - beople need to take responsibility. Sack up and get shit done. Dwelling on the past is the wrong way to move forward.

And hey - my family did have slaves. I have the receipts at my parent's house. But guess what? I'm 200 years disconnected. I have no idea what my family members names were. Do I still owe someone from 200 years ago? Fuck no. That's completely ridiculous.

I agree that people should accept the past, nothing more.

The average black person in this country has more at their disposal for assistance than the average white person in this country - it's a matter of whether or not it is taken advantage of.

Now you lost me. I do agree that it is an "economic" gap, but in no way do I feel even the slightest responsibility to redistribute anything to anyone to "level the field". I don't care if you are black, white, purple, or striped - your financial position is YOUR business NOT mine, and that goes both ways. In no way should I have to subsidize anyone for anything. In no way to I expect my friends, neighbors, fellow Americans to pay for my problems or make my day financially more enjoyable. What people fail to realize is that if each one of us took responsibility for ourselves we wouldn't have these problems that we do.

I'm in no way "bitter" or "whining" about the things that have been done to level the racial playing field in this country; I don't feel as though I am being discriminated against in a way that is going to stop me from achieving my goals and aspirations. But this post just seems rediculous to me, I'm sorry. If you're a minority, you have a better chance of getting into a good school, more jobs to choose from right out of school, lowered likelyhood of getting fired regardless of the performance of the job you do, and will likely be promoted faster inside a company. In one of my HR classes, it was pretty much explained that if you're going to fire somene who is a minority you have to SERIOUSLY document the situation, etc. to avoid facing any kind of legal action of anything else; far more so than if you were to fire a white/asian worker. These are truths - not a biased opinion.

Case in point - I was looking at a reader board outside of a class room the other day and saw this thing for a management strategy workshop at Harvard over the summer. It was like a 3 week program where you get to be a guest and work with some heavy hitters in the academic industry. Problem is - you can't apply if you're white or asian.

The point of all of this is that the playing field is level, period. I mean you can lead a horse to water, but can't make them drink, right? This is now on leaders of the black community to get people to change their priorities and actually get them to take advantage of school opportunities, job offerings, and internship programs. I have a friend who is black and smart as shit - he started taking advantage of the government programs a while ago and now he's finishing up a double major in chemistry and biology. His school has been virtually free from the first day he started looking into higher education. I think that's great - it's the purpose of the programs - and when people start taking advantage of it like my friend did, this "Economic gap" will solve itself.

The sad thing is - if a white guy talks about this stuff candidly or even factually he's a racist/biggot. Ass-backwards world we live in with regards to that.

I don't understand why people (in general, all people) don't just take responsibility for themselves, admit that they had something to do with whatever circumstances they are in, stop being fucking victims of society/race/gender/nationality, sack up, and handle their shit.

Is it just me, or does no one else think that they can handle their life better than the government can? Why go looking for the safety net, the bailout, or the free handout. Do work - you'll be fine.
