though it is impossible to label things right or wrong, i understand that slavery is generally accepted as a terrible thing. of course it is.
what i don't understand is why their are still grudges held over the subject. slavery isn't current, so how can people today spew the remarks that they spew, as though personally injusticed?

up until about 5 years ago, i had living relatives that were prisoners of war for several years. it was a painful experience for them to explain what had happened to them during their time as prisoner, and to their comrades. when the war ended though, everyone shook hands and did their best to just forget everything about it. they understood that the enemy was no longer the enemy.
these men held their chin up and came home to lead respectable, calm lives for the rest of their days. they never once tried to instill in me any hard feelings that they may, or may not have had.

that's the problem at hand i think. people passing on past hate from generation to generation. slavery isn't current. there have been serious wars since the last known act of slavery on american soil, but politically everyone has kissed and made up since then. why not so with slavery? it doesn't make sense to me.
there's really no other explanation for the anger of many black radicals today. if we all based our feelings and views from things that have happened to US, in OUR lifetime, slavery wouldn't ever come up.

my schedule would be very full if i went around fabricating anger over things that happened to my ancestors.

It's not as if African American's as a whole are still pissed off about slavery. It's the very tiny minority that actually get up on the news and demand reparations. African American's being "hung up on slavery" is not the issue. The damage that slavey did to the African American population as a whole is the issue. And there was very real damage done. I talked about it in my post on page 7. And it has nothing to do with race, it was just the natural consequence of massive, diversified slave trade.

And I'm not advocating one solution or another. I just think that dismissing the problem with a "get over it" is not going to help anyone.

That's a nice idea, but it hasn't happened. And with at least 9 billion dollars earmarked for Iraqi reconstruction missing and unaccounted for, and many projects going by the wayside never to be finished, it is a sad situation at best.

BTW, Mr Hussein understood long ago how to handle THEIR extremists. He ran a secular country, that while brutal, served to keep Al Qaeda out and the Islamic fundamentalists at bay. I remember a former CIA analyst saying after the first Gulf War, "if you think Saddam is bad, you should see the guys waiting in the wings". CHICAGO—According to witnesses, a loud black man approached a crowd of some 4,000 strangers in downtown Chicago Tuesday and made repeated demands for change.

"The time for change is now," said the black guy, yelling at everyone within earshot for 20 straight minutes, practically begging America for change. "The need for change is stronger and more urgent than ever before. And only you—the people standing here today, and indeed all the people of this great nation—only you can deliver this change."
                Enlarge Image Black Guy

The black guy is oddly comfortable demanding change from people he's never even met.

It is estimated that, to date, the black man has asked every single person in the United States for change.

"I've already seen this guy four times today," Chicago-area ad salesman Blake Gordon said. "Every time, it's the same exact spiel. 'I need change.' 'I want change.' Why's he so eager for all this change? What's he going to do with it, anyway?"

After his initial requests for change, the black man rambled nonstop on a variety of unrelated topics, calling for affordable health care, demanding that the government immediately begin withdrawing troops from Iraq, and proposing a $75 billion economic stimulus plan to create new jobs.

"What a wacko," Schaumburg, IL resident Patrick Morledge said. "And, of course, after telling us all about how he had the ability to magically fix everything, he went right back to asking for change. Typical."

"If he's really looking for change, he's got the wrong guy," Morledge added.

Reports indicate that the black man has been riding from city to city across the country, asking for change wherever he goes. Citizens in Austin, TX said they spotted the same guy standing on the street Friday, shouting far-fetched ideas about global warming. Cleveland residents also reported seeing him in a local park, wildly gesticulating and quoting from the Bible. And last week, patrons at the Starlight Diner in Cheyenne, WY claimed that the black man accosted them while they were eating, repeatedly requesting change.

"I saw him walk in and I knew he was headed straight for our table," said mother of three Gladys Davies. "He just stood there smiling at us for a while, and asked how our food tasted. Then he went and did the same thing at the next table over. The nerve of some people."

Those who encountered the black man Tuesday said he engaged in erratic behavior, including pointing at random people in the crowd and desperately saying he needs their help, going up to complete strangers and hugging them, and angrily claiming that he is not looking for just a little bit of change, but rather a great deal of change, and that he wants it "right now."

"I'll be honest, when that black guy said he would 'stop at nothing' to get change, it kind of scared me," local mechanic Phil Nighbert said. "Just leave me alone."

Though many were taken aback by the black man's brazen demands, some, such as Jackson, MS's Holly Moser, sympathized with him. She gave the black man credit for boldly standing up and asking every last person around him for change.

"I told him I'd give him some if I saw him later, even though I probably won't," Moser said. "Very nice man, though."

                Most, however, ignored his requests.

"I'm a hardworking American who pays his taxes, and the last thing I need is some guy on the street demanding change from me," said William Overkamp, a Springfield, IL gun-shop owner.

He added, "What he really needs is a job."

Nobody fabricates these emotions consciously. The psychologists Carl Jung wrote about and first postulated a theory that there was a collective and racial subconscious in addition to the personal. In the 1930's he applied those theories to the psyche of the German people and predicted and outlined in detail how they were leading to another war. The aggression that resulted in WWII was rooted in the German subconscious. This collective subconscious can also manifest itself in guilt for the past actions of ones collective. A big part of the immigrants to this country came after slavery was abolished. Still they did not hesitate to either willfully or passively benefit from the racism that remained as a result.
Canadians are appalled at the black/white dichotomy of the US but verbalize the same racial stereotypes about Native Americans. In that case it's justified because, "That's just how they are."

Completely off topic and horribly misguided.

So what you are saying is that Saddam Hussein was better for Iraq than what is there now? By saying that, you are also saying that Saddam Hussein type leaders would be better for America than the democracy that so many of us have willingly pledged our lives to.

I am not going to bother trying to refute your "official" figures. I can come up with statistics that say whatever I want about just about anything.
If you think the war in Iraq is wrong, then fine. State your position. But don't go regurgitating what you have "heard" without really checking it out. Radical blogs are not a good source.

I am saddened when I see people who have swallowed the liberal media koolaid so deeply that they can only see shades of green envy. I really hope that someday you come to obtain some wisdom and realize that the world is so much more of a complicated and scary place than you ever thought it could possibly be. Things aren't so simple as your college professor and morning show host have made them out to be.

The thing that saddens me about Obama is that he is simply a smooth speaking version of his "former" pastor. Sugar coated hate is just as awful as unvarnished hate. It really bothers me that these people hate America.

Why do they hate America? Because it is not what they want. They want a world where any man who is recognized as being more; more intelligent, faster, taller, harder working, more creative, than another is beaten down and taught to be submissive. A world where it is forbidden to excel because it might make somebody else feel inferior. A world where everybody gets their "fair share". A world where you are selfish and greedy if you don't share the fruits of your labor with people who were not sharing the sweat with you to earn it. A world where it is a crime to dream of making yourself better.

The constitution only provides you with the right to pursue happiness. It does not provide you with the right to happiness. There is so much meaning in that word "pursue" because it is not only deeply personal and unique to all of us, but it is also a mandate for us to achieve.

My happiness should not come at the expense of another. In other words, we live by the rule of law as a society. We cannot allow thieves, murderers, rapists, and evil to stand unchallenged.

However, it also doesn't mean that since I have decided to not be happy, that I can point at somebody who is happy and demand justice and that I be allowed to partake of that happiness because we are all created equal. That is the worst twisting of the meaning of equality that I can think of. That isn't equality, that is envy.

The liberals dream of a world where all are treated equally, like sheep in the field, so that we can be told what to think and so that we can all shuffle along in our lives fat, dumb, and ostensibly happy, while the smart, deep thinkers like Hillary, act as our surrogate mommy because lord knows, we are not smart enough to think for ourselves.

The dream of America is dying at the hands of all those who wish to be given their due instead of earning it. Somebody once said that democracy was doomed to failure as soon as the voting public figured out that they could vote themselves money. That is exactly what the Democrats are offering us all.

There are many things in the past that were done that were evil. We should never forget lest we make the same mistakes. I would hazard a guess and say that 100 years from now, better people than us will point at our society and shudder at the evils that we commit that we just think are normal things. We have to be bigger than our forefathers and strive for the betterment of man, one person at a time. You must take care of yourself first before you can help another. You must earn respect and you must learn responsibility. Without those things you are a truly hollow person.

The slaves were not the only persecuted people in the world. Persecution has happened throughout history. Those scars are slow to heal. But by picking at them over and over again, like Obama's pastor and people like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, all you do is foster hate. You foster a sense of disenfranchisement. You make people hate their country and their neighbors. You force divisiveness in people. If you don't mix into the great mixing pot of America you are doomed to forever be an outsider in a place that accepts everybody. As far as I am concerned, if you don't desire to be a part of America, if you are so filled with hate because of the mistakes of people from hundreds of years ago, then you should leave. We don't need you.
