Global Warming: What do you think? What do you know?
costs a lot but with the way fuel prices are now it cant get much worse
Yeah but lok at hte overhead involved in producing e85? I mean there is going to be a SHIT load of changes that have to be made to make this viable. Between the direct/indirect costs of production - labor costs - and the fact that you're going to have to shift a large number of people in the economy in a direction that is viewed as a regression.. it probably won't cost more than the alternatives.
Also with something like this, as more of it gets produced better ways of producing it will emerge. Though refining of ethanol could become more streamlined, you can't automate the whole process and there will always be a large amount of manual labor involved. It should be possible to get a machine to synthesize gasoline.

The 17 to 40 year old in question here was allowed to freely travel
back and forth from the good ol' US of A and Afghanistan, thanks
to his being a so-called "guest worker" visa he was granted.
More to the point " agricultural " guest worker. This is the stuff
Mr. Chappaquiddick & Senator McCain are pushing for.

yikes - that's a pretty far-right-wing way of putting it; even for my conservative ass.
I agree with you - but how do you propose we do that? there are plenty of slackasses who need a job and I'd be more than willing to make it work in that way. That would have a huge net-benefit for the economy. But simply saying we have a labor surplus and automatically moving them into some sort of agricultural labor is not going to be easy as it's going to require relocation (and associated fees), wages that make it attractive, etc.
Bush was on TV not too long ago talking about retraining people from textile industry into healthcare administration. I know I am, and usually you too, are anti-intervention, but with stubborn people who are no longer in demand, I believe it's necessary to help people adjust to hard circumstances.
And you could go to the bar, take the drinks you would imbibe and take 'em home in a 5 gal bucket and use that fancy engineering degree your gonna get to invent a way to make regular ole Pabst Blue Ribbon into fuel, its cheaper by the gallon.
Then go to California Air Resources Board and hand out literature for pabst85.

In a quest to wean itself off oil, Sweden is turning to an unusual alternative fuel: smuggled alcohol.
Last year, the Swedish government confiscated almost 200,000 gallons (more than 700,000 liters) of alcohol that was illegally brought into the country.
It used to be standard procedure for customs officials to pour the stuff down the drain.
Now the beer, wine, and spirits are instead converted into biofuel—which helps power thousands of cars, buses, taxis, garbage trucks, and even a train.
"This alcohol, which used to go to waste, is now turned into something that's positive for the environment," said Ingrid Jarlebrink of Tullverket, the Swedish Customs agency based in Malmö, Sweden.
Indeed, recycling alcohol is just one of a number of alternative transport fuels in use in Sweden.
More than one-quarter of all the energy consumed in Sweden in 2004 came from renewable sources—more than four times as much as the European Union average of 6 percent. In the capital, Stockholm, one-quarter of city buses run on ethanol or biogas.
yes but address my second point - why not make it in a lab? it's been done... and then we don't have to mess with the rest. this isn't a "status quo" response... this just saves a hell of a lot of headaches. We can grow skin in a lab, we can re-attach limbs, and put people on the moon... but we can't synthesize oil? I find that hard to believe.
I'm not a nuclear or chemical major, but I would guess it takes energy to make energy.
With age, a guy becomes more and more sceptical. I don't deny at all that global warming exists. No. I just wonder what the real causes are.
Back in the early 1970s, there was an Arab/Venezuelian oil embargo. They just reduce how much crude oil could be exported. At the same time, the medias and government were telling us that there was a shortage of oil because we reached the bottom of our natural sources... Yup. No more oil on earth. And we all believed it.
Now, arabs are blamed for selling oil barrels at an insane price. Yeah sure. Somebody has forgotten to tell the public that oil barrels are now taken more seriously than gold and the US currency and that the reason why the prices are skyrocketing is because instead of buying bonds or gold, investors buy and sell oil... It has become a blue chip. So, prices will always rise, never go down, unless another source of energy is found and investors again switch their investments.

It is very interesting to me that only one of you have mentiond a form of solar energy? In my opinion this is the only route to go and seems dumb not to. Heat and light from the sun, along with other solar resources such as wind and wave power, hydroelectricity and biomass, account for over 99.9% of the available flow of renewable energy on Earth. Why invest into trying to move your car with corn when all you have to do is harness the solar energy and figure a way to transport it and make it usable, which we are capable of doing, Thermal Mass Storage. There are certain areas of the country that are good for certain things do to climate. For example Nebraska for corn, Washington for apples, Florida for oranges, Mexico for Tequilla ect. but solar power is everywhere. With all the technological advances we have come up with I think this should be on the list as #1 in dealing with, not making food move the world.
